  1. I`d change to 20/50 oil and see if the situation improves - What have you to loose ??

  2. lets hope its a dodgy bit of wiring , may be worth checking the connection to the switch and the dash light.

  5. There's another light?? [IMG]

It's the red light on the right that says 'oil' that comes on. That light and the alternator light come on on startup, as they are meant to, and go straight off as they are meant to. If ever I stall they both come on.... I had this problem after the engine was taken out and replaced as something needed tightening up (can't blimmin remember what they called it now). But this time, it's been the oil light that flickers on momentarily when slowing at a roundabout and as soon as we stop (engine still running) it then goes out. I drove for 30mins earlier and it did it twice. Weird thing is the van feels fine, infact he feels happier than ever after having his engine out, a few minor leaks dealt with, the engine rear main seal was replaced, new fuel filter, new gear box seal, new heater hose, new air filter, new ignition points ....surely the lights meant to stay on if there's a problem isn't it?

What's the charging light?! Is there another warning light that I'm not aware of!!

  6. The charging light is the alternator light:thumbsup:

I cant believe no one has asked how hot your engine is getting after travelling at 55mph. This will thin the oil down and cause a partial pressure drop, our westy (on a type 4 motor) does the same especially in hot weather after travelling on a dual carriageway/motorway.

Have you got all of the tinware in place and the foam engine bay seal in as well?

  8. no as said same as alternator light , i was just checking , imo if you change your oil to 20/50 and check level ,providing things arnt getting too hot , your be ok . As your going to TE id take it easy going their and get one of the boys to have a wee look .

  9. How do I establish the engine temp? When the garage had the engine out they said they painted and refitted tinware and replaced screw fittings. I'm not entirely sure what you mean by foam engine bay seal ...

A foam seal that goes around the engine between the tinware and the engine bay itself.
Stick a photo up; it'll be obvious if it's there or not.

there is a foam seal which follows the edge of the tinware fitted to the motor and seals to the body as it follows the contour around. I might have an image.

The engine temp - put your hand on it and feel how hot it is!

  12. Thanks Barney rubble - please check away, I feel like a fish out of water

Unfortunately I've had to cut plans to go to techenders (see group post) as we have a new addition to family arriving from the rescue centre next week - wasn't expecting it to be so soon! The van is booked in for MOT Tuesday week so I'll ask them to look at it, but I really like to try and understand things rather than just run to the garage each time! It's a very frustrating time this learning malarkey![IMG]

@nikkiwalker1984 you can see the foam seal in the image above - its the grey coloured strip either side of the engine bay - there is some tinware missing on the image, yours will look slightly different

  14. yeh learning something new is hard ,especially reading lots of different views etc , shame your not going as that would help you loads , good luck with the dog and hope you get to the bottom of it , but doooo beware of men sucking air thru teeth in some of these garages , let them know you know other people too .

  15. Yours seems to be happening as you brake ? You sure its got enough in as the oil pump is at the back so if very very low could starve the pump. ?? Just a guess. Would need to be very low though

  16. I'll have a look in the light Tomo, can't see it in any of my pics but then they are angled wrong. What does this foam do?

Yes, shame you can't make Techenders.
Meanwhile, the oil light should not flicker, but it's common and always has been, right from new in the 70's. I would change your oil as advised above, the straight 30 is not really up to the job. If that doesn't cure it, report back.

  18. Well I thought it did - half way between lines on the oil stick. And the ground seems level where I'm testing .... I'll check again tho...

Thanks everyone for ideas and support

Foam seal is a red herring, it keeps the exhaust fumes out of your heating mainly. Lack of it won't cause your engine to run hot at speed.
