Big silver fag machines chained up outside the news agents. Handy if you were desperate for ten Number 6 in the middle of the night.
Luxury. Dad suddenly got a job in Switzerland and I had to go alone, aged 11, to an American school in Zug every day from where we lived near Luzern. 12 miles on a bus and 50 miles by train in a country where initially I didn't speak a word of the lingo (Swiss German). It helped me get self confidence - I managed to blag a ride in the loco cab some mornings, but my parents didn't need to know that.
You hardly ever see dog poop now, they've all been trained how to dump into a small black bag and leave them randomly everywhere instead. Dog poop biodegrades quickly, God knows what the half life of a plastic poop bag is...
Kids wheeling an old pram or homemade go-kart with a home made Guy in it. No plastic involved. Going to visit relatives with the whole family in the car, no seat belts and the baby on the mother’s knee on the front seat. Having a fag on your flight to Spain etc. The family picnic laid out on the travel rug. Everything made at home. Adults had a flask of tea and kids some squash in a Tupperware cup with a lid on.
Bonus points for a wicker hamper plus tartan rug and tartan Thermos. We were never Scottish, as far as I know, so what that was all about I'll never know.
I used to walk about 10 miles a day, 5 miles there and back, until a mate gave me a bus card to forge.
Dublin pubs where the bar was ten feet away in the haze of cigarette smoke, and you were served Guinness at the table by a waiter despite 100 people jammed between you and the bar. Maplin Electronics Jiffy bags full of electronic parts that arrived in the post also filled with cigarette smoke by whoever was packing the bags.
I reckon they thought they were in the clear once them Victorian posh ladyfolk stopped nicking their homespun homes in the name of canvas building for miniature paintings
Plaxtons coach builders are just outside Scarborough and an hour along the A64 from Mighty Leeds . Most days you could see the bare chassis being driven to Paxtons by a bloke in full face helmet and motorcycle gear when they came up the M1, through Leeds City centre and out through Seacroft towards the A64 and 'Plackys' . Haven't seen them for decades as now they seem to trailer them up two or three at a time piggy back stylee - boring !! Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk
