It does sound a bit trite but work/life balance is something to consider. Far too many people are driven to get more, bigger, newer, shinier and because there is always something more, or bigger, or newer then they are never satisfied and never content. I know two people who are fabulously wealthy and I really doubt that they are actually happy even though they have lots of nice stuff.

Amen, once in the rat race, you will never have quite enough moiney. Abandon it (TV is a good start) and life looks utterly different.

  10. Ive both had my own business and looked at lots of other businesses to set up or buy into . Location is the first and most important if you are selling or providing a service where you rely on joe public ,also good product and service , with your own touch . The most important is putting everything into it to get it off the ground , so you may have to sacrifice your social and leisure life for quite some time unless you can work and live the dream in the same place which can help . Having clout behind you too will relieve the stresses of what normal life can chuck at you , especially if you have the need to employ staff . You just cant afford to shut doors for very long even if you have built it up . Your opportunity /location sounds idillic malc . I assume you have a business plan and know the ropes re food and drink etc so good luck to you both if you go for it .

Tbh, I am the weak link 're experience in this trade. Lou has the background of running cafes bakeries etc. We don't have a business plan in place yet. We have to have a few meetings with the environmental people and the planning office. I can afford to set up and maybe run for a year, but in truth the offer we just had has sent is reeling. We are Sat here saying a zillion things to each without really having a firm.plan in place. Scary and exciting atm.

I have good work/business ethic and am quite good at planning, but mainly I have great drive.

Yes to a certain extent. It's dated and needs a good makeover. Most of the old kitchen stuff needs to go and the interior painted. Outside there is area for about 8 tables overlooking a great big open space surrounded by forest and walks.

Jan and I started a catering business when I left the RAF and within three years we were employing 14 people, we had two shifts of workers two drivers and two brand new trucks, Jan spent all day down at the units managing staff and deliveries, I built an office in the garden and spent all day inside chasing invoices and sorting paye and VAT returns. When we went to bed each night (knackered) it was a board meeting about staff, customers etc.
Our weekly bill at the local bakers for bread was over £1500, Local butchers bill was even more.
We were making an absolute fortune but....we didn't have any time to spend it, didn't have a summer holiday for about 7 years because of work. Had two weeks off at Christmas but apart from Christmas Day and Boxing Day we were improving or redesigning or rebuilding the units as that's
Was the only time they weren't swamped in staff.
It wasn't until we'd been trading for about 14 years that we finally stopped and took a long hard look at what we were actually doing. The catalyst for change was a chain of shops we'd been supplying in Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire who wanted us to deliver to their shops nationally.
We decided to sell the business rather than either expand it or even just carry on as we were.
Instantly we both felt a great weight lifted off our shoulders and started doing the really important things like sitting in the garden on a sunny afternoon, having a lay in on a Sunday morning. Our income probably dropped by 3/4 and it felt great.
My advice, for what it's worth, if you feel trapped at work, get off the treadmill.

Edit: I've just read Malc's post and mine was in no way referring to his potential business which is a completely different business model to ours.

I know two brothers back up north who have both owned Chip shops for the last 12/13 years, Both buy the exact same stuff from the same place and cook it exactly the same. One is a millioniare one is struggling all the time and borrows money from the other, The one who is a millionaire got lucky and bought a shop that is in the right place and has never moved, it's packed every day six days a week, The other has tried and failed and moved and tried and failed and moved again about 6 times and they taste exactly the same. Location location location with food and cooked nice of course
