What a complacent bunch LA's are eh? I think you're bang on that they want you to front up all the costs so they can market your idea with as little outlay from themselves as possible. I doubt they have someone in particular lined up, but the wink will be nodded here there and everywhere by anyone in the LA that hears of it.

We have already been told officially that there are two other people in the frame. We were initially told ( and perhaps we were naive ) that we were being offered this exclusively and others that have been approached previously have shown no interest. I guess these are the people that are back in the frame. Either way, we aren't doing the donkey work only to be gazzumped at the last minute without assurances ( Which they can't and won't give ) we are very reluctant to go ahead.

I'm guessing the up front costs with no garauntees have put the others off previously too?
If the costs of tendering outweigh the potential profitability of the place that would explain why it's sitting unused. Madness!

Initially we thought quite the opposite. The idea was to open four days a week and I run it with a part time assistant. easy life.

After doing the research and costing the whole thing out and adding in the new obstacles such as the sceptic tank and planning consultation fee etc, we realised it would have to be totally full time and the odd evening special meal night too, just to make it viable. couple this with the fact Lou would have to be there in a permanent capacity as she holds the qualifications and it becomes a much bigger commitment.

The fact they now seem to have people in reserve and different obstacles keep cropping up makes it obvious there is something not right. tbh I am not totally surprised, we had this once before with our LA. They have a reputation for it amongst the local inhabitants!

It's a bit like peopple who have the rotting hulk of a camper sat in a field. You knock to enquire because although it's completely beyond redemption it might have a few salvageable bits and bobs.
"No chance mate, these are worth a fortune done up, I wouldn't take less than £5k for it." lol

Not quite the analogy I would have used, but your point is well made Zed!

The same sort of frustration. I know of a couple of these vans around here. They will continue to sit there as they have for 20 years.

Are you quite close to Dog? ;)

  11. Now you have the idea of running a cafe, what about looking around for somewhere else to rent now this one seems to be a non starter.

No mate. Tbh we have sort of realised the commitment is something we are not prepared for at this time of life. This whole saga has made us realise, we are not getting any younger and our needs are different now from 10 years ago!

The simple fact we would have to outlay to provide us with a job and a income we already have has made us quietly thankful we have nice steady jobs.

Every cloud and all that.

  13. That's always the problem with small business set up, it's only worth paying out up front if you can make more than you can get paid as a wage.

  14. Or you are looking for a life style change and money is not the main driver.

Neither really. This opportunity was presented to us as a result of my regular walks and on the face of it seemed ideal. I would like to change my job at some point, but not really that bothered yet. Lou likes her job and giving up the security can be quite worrying at our age.

Getting older is a bugger, you still have all the ideas but you also see the realities. With the lack of regular dependable employment nowadays i think there are more people than ever looking for a nice little niche to tuck themselves into where they can feel more in control of their lives. Youngsters will throw themselves at things we can see aren't really viable without them becoming life itself as we once did - they don't mind, we do!

This is the crunch. I did all those things before and now see the pitfalls. Age is a benefit and a hold back at times.
