Precisely what puts me off. I can duck and dive here, I know the score.

  2. think we have come to a plateau in our lives , where we can stand back and let other people fight over the crumbs..:D

My Dad had a 15 year plan when he retired at 65. He reckoned the first 5 years at so much a year, next 5 at a bit less as they slowed down a bit, next 5 at less again. He only worked it out up to 80. He's 83 now, but luckily invested when there was a bit of a return to be had, unlike now!

I'm working on a 30 year plan - don't really expect to be here in 30 years, but you never know. It takes a bit of getting used to having a finite amount of money to survive on but after 12 months I feel pretty relaxed about things.

It also depends on how finite that amount of money is Bern. My dad had a good wedge saved up, I've been trying to get him to squander it for decades but I think old habits die hard. Now he finally really doesn't care he's too old and disinterested to waste it gracefully.

It was possibly even busier in the past, before they re routed the new A50 , as the salt box is on the old A50 taking you through Hilton and Etwall then Derby all bypassed now .

  16. Its all relative to necessary outgoings and life (style) expectations and then good luck with your health. Ive paid in to a pension for 20 years and that was my savings... Thats now not only not growing but has been raped by the expectations of those whove gone before me and poor management and now itd not worth a great deal at all. Ive had my expectations raised to have a comfortablish early retirement and now my retirement age is 67. So following the current trend they will only be paying me for 2 years.

There are some variables though. Ie if i e arned less my daughter would get a larger student loan to cover her living expenses which we currently contribute to. Kids now have to stay at school to 18 so no choice about supporting my second daughter. Ah, you say, your choice to have kids. Again, like the pension the goalposts have moved. Strangely it always costs me more. The more i earn the more it costs me. Im a victim of my own circumstances and to be honest i could happily pack it all in tomorrow.

I have no mortgage and my main expenditure is on tax and insurance for my growing fleet of old vehicles :). I have paid into pensions on and off over the years, tho sadly I believe the advice to put my 4 yrs of superannuated MOD pension into private all those years ago was in hindsight not fab!
I paid into Spanish pension for about 7 yrs but cannot transfer it to uk, and have to contribute for 15 yrs to get a state pension.
I feel that 2016 is the year to properly start documenting our finances and see exactly what we need to live on and where we can make savings, esp as I feel my tennis elbow keeps returning thus leaving me unable to work :(.

I can play in my vehicles tho :).

Good luck @poptop2 and @Top Banana Racing :)

  18. I hear pensions advisers make good money...;)

if I were to advise a youngster about future proofing, I'd say invest in your human capital...hand skills...one of the few things that won't actually be worth less in twenty five years due to real-term inflation....
