  1. Assuming no mortgage or rent.
Just food, power, light, heating etc and of course leisure activities.

More than I'll ever earn, at least to keep me in the style I'd like to become accustomed to.

Obviously I can see where you are coming from with this question. My advice to you would be go see a couple of old age pensioners living in a house they have scrimped and saved for over the last 50 years and ask them how they much they need to survive. A lot more than they get will be the honest answer.

You will need more too mate.

  7. That's why I asked you! ;) (and Bob, Zed, Bern, Don, Jono and all the other OAP's senior statesmen.)

if you mean to stay in the house i'm in then off the top of my head these items are non negotiable.
    mortgage £500 p/m
    council tax £112 p/m
gas/electricity £70 p/m - could reduce if had too but would still have to have.
    water £35 p/m
so just over £700 without food or petrol is the answer, like it or not everything else in your life is a luxury (internet/tv/phones etc)
i guess at a push take home of £1200 a month would leave me skint but alive and able to search for better whilst still not going into more debt but i'd have to stop all luxuries.

  11. i can get 4 icecreams on stick for a pound and ive got one of those time release feeders so i cant over indulge :D

  12. Any or all of them as long as you state it.
These are both a matter of opinion.
I reckoned £1200 without mortgage so you could live 'nicely'?

I was mostly being serious there Glyn. I spoke to my mum and dad about their finances recently and my dad said if he had to survive on the minimum state handout he would be in trouble. He has no mortgage or rent, just utility and food bills. Luckily he has worked hard and has back up. He told me others he knows are seriously struggling and if you had no income at all other than the bit you can make selling etc, I think you might find yourself in a similar position. I am not trying to put a downer on your plans in the least, Great idea and good luck from me and my lot, we admire it. But seriously think abut what money you spend now and ask yourself what you can realistically make duckin and divin - I mean that in a nice way btw.

It was a eye opener when I went from a good wage (just short of the high tax) to nothing when I got ill
5 years on I work part time and the wife is on OK money, we are a lot happier and realised a lot of that stuff you don't need
Yes more would be nice but at what cost and you will always want more

Hard one to answer really - it depends on what your leisure requirements are. Our house is pretty expensive to run even though we have no mortgage these days. We kept a list of what we spent on food and drink for a few months to give us an idea.

  17. I know what you're saying, we have plans that give around £20k a year (projected) on top of state pension (but that's 15 years away!).
I know of someone who is jacking it all in with no money, no savings and no idea. @lost-en-france is kecking it that he'll turn up on his doorstep.
I reckon I've got about 5-7 years of this shiite left then I'm falling off grid. Just seeing if everyone else reckons I'm about right with (in today's money) £300 for two of us if there was no mortgage or rent, just food'n'bills.

if i took my £500 mortgage off my monthly wage it would be £1200 so yes. - please feel free to pay it off for me.
that said if i didn't have a mortgage i'd look for a job at £1200 a month so i could do less hours/work/responsibility..... for me it's not about the money, i'm happy to pay my bills and just get by with the minimum amount of hours at work.

  19. I daren't look at what we spend on food and drink.
Because we don't look, it's easier (and often better) to ask opnion, even on here!
Not jackin it in tomorrow, just a LOOOONG way before I'm 67, mainly because no male family member in known history has made it past 63!!!!!
