Sounds nice, would be good to work with lou? Catering is hard work I'm sure you know but there are options. I know the chap that owns the best tea room in England (thus proclaimed year after year). He charges a fortune but people love it! And he is a complete nutter, ex-barister/pyromaniac.

Yes. I can't tell you too much atm, but part of the deal is we take paid for guided walks and help enhance the area by whatever ways we can. All within ecological confines of course. No plant damage or digging up the area. I can have a vw meet though.

  3. any water courses or ponds/lakes?

    local primary schools?

could be a really interesting opportunity....

Is access good? do you have contacts to push it? Back to George the crazy man with the tea rooms - he simply aimed to provide the very best everything in the best surroundings with the best service and an eye-watering bill to match. It doesn't put people off.
If you made sheds and advertised them in the local paper you'd sell them for, say, £149.
If you painted the same shed with farrow and ball type colours and took out a 1/2 page advert in a Sunday Mag, same shed £899.
It's all ***** to the extent, in my humble opinion, that with the right approach and advertising anything will work.
Good luck if you go for it.

  8. also...contact your local conservation volunteer group...if you've got a viable base for brews and butties you'll get some invaluable help for very little...maybe try an organic allotment and incorporate some green energy ideas (grants available)
check out the Cat Centre or Low impact living initiative for some good ideas/projects to get local schools/families involved

    Lots of both.
We are just reeling from the offer atm mate. It would be summer by the time we knock it into shape.
We are as I say reeling from the offer atm. The rangers are on our side ad as long as we enhance the area which they are agreed a cafe will, we have their full support. Lou is seriously thinking about it now, whereas three hours ago so she had a open mind.

Would this get you out of that lorry? If yes I say go for it, you only have one life.

  12. Given what people pay for Marmite coffee at Costa, and what the margins are, it must be possible to make something like this work.

The answer to the original question for me is about a tenner a day for basics at the moment maybe less. That excludes accomodation costs but includes heating, lighting and cream cakes. I think £100/week/person is base level without making too much effort - you could get it down further by suffering unduly. That would cover 1 bottle single malt too. :)

Punch up time I'm afraid. Costa coffee is mega, worth every penny. Success in a cup. Buy same from supermarket and it rubbish though.

  15. tbh Malc, the scope is pretty huge for a focus property in a local beauty spot....I doubt you'd be millionaires but that's not really what it's about, in the final analysis...
if you're both quite creative and good at planning, there's loads you can do all year round...wildlife guides, pond dipping, easter egg hunts, bike fettling, wood carving, mulled wine and christmas decs making...

Lou has worked in the local schools for years. Still does as a TA at the high school. The rangers are the local conservationist and the head honcho was the guy we just had a very pleasant meeting with. He wants to push this on and is keen to get it up and running.

    @Top Banana Racing - What a great thread. :)
Escapism is at the heart of T2 ownership I think you'd agree.
Escapism doesn't have to be a dream.
Why make plans for retirement if you might not make it/be too knackered to enjoy it?
I don't remember voting for working like a fool until I was 80.
With cunning, a better balance is available now.
If that means do what you enjoy for a liveable pittance that is success in my eyes.

  20. You have to somehow get out of the state system that says you have to work until a certain age. Independence has a lot to recommend it.
