A few post back I mentioned that I was going to try to learn the guitar with my rescued from the tip guitar. Unfortunately, since then I've discovered that my left hand ring finger hardly bends at the knuckle nearest the nail...this is a bit of a problem with a classical guitar neck at over 50mm. I've tried a narrower 44mm acoustic but it still is proving problematic not to foul strings when stretching for a low note.

So, a friend has lent me a tenor guitar. The sharp eyed amongst you may have noticed a shortage of strings, only 4 and more importantly a neck width of 33mm enabling me to reach round and hopefully carry on learning.

Big question ... does anybody on here play the tenor or similar (Mandola/mandolin etc) if so I'd love to pick you brain :)

That's unfortunate but you just have to play around it and develop your own style. Django Reinhardt managed with only 2 fingers. :)

  4. Indeed. No excuses!

There's always an excuse waiting in the wing somewhere :p

Seriously, I'm doing this for fun and after a few months trying, I'd rather try something that I can physically achieve.

PS the tenor sounds great but there's not a lot of info out in the ether, hence my question here.

  6. It looks rather odd. Standard tuning seems to be in fifths (like a violin), rather than fourths like a standard guitar (bottom four strings, anyway).

That's really going to confuse you. Take up the cello ;)?

  8. I looked at several banjo-playing sites and it seems it's no longer necessary to marry your sister, so should be fine

I'm going to give it a go, the CGDA tuning is lovely but the GDAE tuning is the same as the guitar, so chord shapes are similar. I know I'm a complete beginner and so I've got nothing to unlearn... the really narrow neck may help, it's worth a try.

Have a listen to this guy

Built a wooden guitar stand for offset Jazzmaster. Bit of ply and some trimmed leather belts. Not quite Mouseman, but does the job
