  1. I would be changing them.

Have to agree, the fibre ones are much more reliable but the pressed ones should be ok. It's that small doubt stopped me using them.

If you go for the empi ones, put them against your manifold, draw round with a biro, cut down to size with scissors.
For some reason they glue themselves to the head, but not the manifold - I like that. One of the better things under the EMPI umbrella.

  6. x2 for the EMPI gaskets (surprisingly). I’ve never really liked the “one-time” stock metal things.

Should I change them as a matter of course?

  11. I’d see how it goes, nip your manifold nuts down. Next time you have them off, put some EMPI ones on.

  12. personally I would be doing it sooner rather than later.
They would have to be the cause of the leak.

The steel ones are a “once only” gasket. Did you put new ones one?

On a side note, do you have lock nuts on the manifolds?

Yes I used new gaskets every time, I replaced all the gaskets on both rebuilds, as not to take any chances,

I don't have lock nuts as I was advised against it, as they can draw out the stud on removal

  14. Dunno if I agree with that but fair enough

Do you have a star or lock washer?

I used a domed 11mm / 13mm nut with a star washer and countersunk the manifold base

Well we made it 70 miles and are now camping, engine ran fine, oil temp sat @ 110-120 @50-55mph 20220507_134333.jpg

  16. That is quite hot for those speeds, but you have got new bits.

I was just glad I past jnc 26 on the a12 as that's where it broke down last time

Do you think the temps will come down

  18. I’d think so, as everything wears in. Just take it easy.

Assuming here that your temp gauge is more or less accurate. If you’ve got a dipstick sender, worth doing the boiling water test when you get back.

Agreed, new rings make it hot for a few 100 miles. Well done!
