Darren MacRae goodbye (again) post!

  1. Dealer is taking upwards of £1500 I believe, she decided to sell at a price £16,500 which I believe would leave me with £15,000 or just under. I hadn't a clue what I should be asking but she suggested this price so well see how things go. I knew I'd never make back everything I spent on it anyway! I'll see how things pan out :)

  2. Wanted to keep the bus as a 2ltr, and pretty much every engine I could find came in at the price I spent. If I was to go cheaper I'd be going for a 1600. Anyway, the recon engine seems to be a good selling point so I'll keep my fingers crossed.

  3. And for everyone's info the new engine was fitted PROPERLY and PROFESSIONALLY! :)

  4. Welcome back fella, If you sell it through a classified ad on here does the dealer still take their cut ;)

  5. Thanks :) Sadly, by posting a classified add the dealer insists I direct the buyer to to her website to be bought through her. I'm not allowed to sell privately so to speak. Good thing about the dealer though, is she offers finance - something I couldn't do privately!

That shows how the prices have gone on our buses. Blooming sharks ready to cash in. Sorry Darren. Glad to see you're okay and all that. but the thought of van estate agents getting in on the act is pretty sad really.

  7. Have you got a link for the website Darren? Good luck with your adventures.

  8. @DarrenNI , why did you not come back on here first for advice with selling your van? There are a lot of genuine 'good' guys on here who would have steered you in the right direction. There will have been some, let's call it, tongue in cheek advice which you could ignore but generally speaking there is a wealth of experience & knowledge to be had. Because you are such a nice bloke, you never know, you may have just sold it on here & saved yourself some money!
This is not a dig at you, just interested to know the reasoning behind your descision. Also what happened to the VW hire business you were running & would it not transfer to Ireland as a sideline? Lastly, what happens if you take it out of the hands of the dealer, do you still have to pay her percentage?

  9. So if she's taking "upwards of" £1,500 is she on a percentage?

  10. @DarrenNI . Interesting selling through a dealer. I cant see anything untoward with that provided they tske the risks of any comebacks and insulate you from that. At the end of the day you just need cash in the bank and the bus gone as soon as possible. Im not ure this would have been a good place to sell or even take advice to be honest. Ie more hassle than its worth having multiple points of view and probably people having a good old debate about it im guessing would have been stressful for you

In respect of your engine thing then you are where you are and took an albeit expensive decision to get there but it seems the desired outcome was reached and its all history now isnt it. Sometimes people just want things done and not thousands of words on the subject.

Oh yes, i would like to see the advert if possible but im guessing that too will spark a debate.

  11. I was only asking why not seek advice from knowledgable folk, I'm not trying to spark a debate. The answer will no doubt be a simple one. There are countless members who will have bought & sold countless vans, cars, busses, trains, planes & automobileyhacts so why not seek counsel? My view is this, if someone says to me 'I can get this much for that' then that, to me, means I can get that much for it too as long as it is advertised properly etc etc. So I would then research the best way to go about it. This means I learn something as well as saving some hard earned cash, the knowledge I gain doing this myself can then be passed on.
edit: Smiley added so as not to offend :)

Have you ever signed onto a strange forum, asked a simple question and have it turn into a million post epic in 2 days flat? I think I'd have been properly freaked out myself.

  13. I suppose (snowball effect also contributed) but Darren wasn't a new member he joined around the time I did. I like him! He went to extraordinary lengths to get his van sorted....... all up in the highlands, by himself with limited skills. I think he should be applauded. I can't comment really, I have only driven my van 3 times & don't know the ins & outs of an air-cooled engine to save my life...... but I will learn! So much so that I have started work at a VW garage for less than minimum wage (the same garage that my van has been on the ramp for 12 months) because one way or another I will get it done & hopefully it will lead to bigger & better things (I am currently trying to grow the business by building a down draught spray booth, so we can take vans from start to finish). I have learned to weld & do bodywork so natural proression will be either paint spraying or engine work. It's all good!

  15. I live in the highland s and it is hard to get people to look at ur bay ,most are a bit scared or just simply can't comprehend fixing anything u can't plug a laptop into .This forum helped me a lot and I managed myself to sort just about anything out concerning my bay problems ,due to the fact that I listened to people on here.
Good luck Darren selling the bay hopefully the next owner will have more luck with it .

  16. I was struggling to know where to start whennit came to selling. And also struggling to find a safe place to store the van overr winter. I thought I'd give the company a try and see what happens.

Please excuse the fact that at the top its listed as a 1600 enging, the dealer must have made a mistake there! Its listed as a 2 ltr in the description though :)

  18. Honestly I never even gave a thought to the late Bay, sorry! I was massively busy and just went for what seemed the quickest route to getting it advertised. Also, with my location, I thought I was a good idea to go through the dealer. I need to sell, simple as that, its came to the point where I need to move on. I can't take the business to Ireland, as I'm either going to be constantly moving around from place to place OR there is the possibility I could be working on an island, depending if my application is successful! If I take the van back from the dealer I don't have to pay a penny and she gets nothing when I sell.
