so how do you stop the heat from distorting the panels, short welds????

  8. Looking great. The work you are doing is top notch. Are you keeping the flowers etc. on the paint?

excellent job on the wheelarch inner and outer, looks good! Those sills are a right pain to do successfully

  11. Another excellent resto thread, I have started mine, I will put some pics up soon, I am at the back of mine going to work forward so I will be doing those sills I suspect....hmm looking forward to that. What settings do you use for plug welding and size hole, I am having mixed success and have now starting to plug weld using a larger hole, about 7mm, is this what you are doing? Also where did you get that excellent stand / Jig from, I might go for one of those myself.
    Have some Karma.

excellent work there. all these resto's are making me want to get out and do mine. keep it up!

  13. Got the jig of an eBay company and to be honest if a could be arsed I could of made it myself but was nice to just bolt it straight on and it's works well. As for the plug welding my jogging tool has a punch on it which is about 5mm but i couldn't get on with such a small hole as I don't think u can guarantee a good strong weld so I use a larger drill around 8mm then just weld through it. Bobs ur uncle!!

I started with large holes for plug welds. To get them smaller and get a good "stick" to the panel behind, turn your welder up up higher than you think and aim for the material at the back. To stop the bit with the hole burning away, make sure they are clamped tight together. I'm down to a 5mm hole now. I have 20- 170A welder with 6 settings. I plug weld on no.4 usually, or 5 sometimes so that's 110-140A. High setting also means you end up with a nearly flat weld.
If it's vertical panel - aim towards the top and let gravity help pool in the hole to start with, beginning at the top.

And no hesitation - bang it in in one go

  15. Sounds logical, I'll give that a go. Typical that Ill find out how to plug weld properly when I've nearly finish the job ha ha! Cheers

I still do the odd bum one I can tell you! but there's usually a reason.

  17. Thanks for the info regarding the plug welding Zed and Daisy. I had a go with the joggler punch but they were rubbish, kept pulling apart. Have started going for the higher settings so maybe I am on the right track, practice required I think, I am a welding novice. Will have a look on fleabay re the jig see what there is. Thanks again.

  18. Right then Zed I must say I wash you had cast your wisdom down to me 6 months ago as that is a much better way to plug weld, been using my punch today and had the welder at 100amps and they were perfect! had a couple go a bit dodgy but overall so much better, cheers!

So this was a practice weld
    [IMG]

Then have cracked on and got my outer sill on

So that's that side done just needs a bit of dressing, back corner to do next then clean and paint the bottom and then she will be back on her wheels yey!
