No tester for me, I think it smells very rich and when I took a couple of plugs out to check I had compression they were very sooty
From my reading I think the issue was exactly what @davidoft said the fuel mixture. So when the afm wasnt plugged it it was getting fuel like your old gravity fed boiler then when I plugged it in it was forcing to much fuel in from the pump. I just adjusted the mixture screw to the lowest point and it was running with the afm plugged in I think we have found the fault
I can mess about with the idle screw, but I dont think I have the right fuel ratio I think I might have to take it to a garage to fine tune it, but I honestly from when I asked if I needed a jack to get the engine out to it running again never thought I would have done it.
I know you'd love to hand it to a garage but don't forget what happened last time. You've learned a lot and you're nearly there - keep going - the next bit will teach you how to keep it running right and where to look/what you can do if it isn't into the future.
Normal garages don’t understand these engines and systems like us sad geeks on here All you will end up with is a hefty bill and more problems down the line You have learnt and adapted and overcome in quick time Don’t hand over the baton before the final hurdle
Its true! You've gone from knowing nothing (no offence, I'm not far behind you from where you started!) to taking the blimmin engine out, rebuilding the bugger, and putting it back in........ Now, all you have to do, is a bit of fettling and problem solving, and you are at the best bit! Dont give it to some monkey spanker to come up with an expensive solution to a non existent problem! Just ask, post videos, and I know that the knowledgeable folk on here will be glad to show off, I mean help!
Just want to thank everyone for the encouragement. Back at it, the postwoman just congratulated me as she walked past Just trying to tune this every time I try and get the idle below 1000 it just dies on me any one have any thoughts
Have you read the L Jetronic pdf at all? That details how to adjust idle speeds etc the correct way, it’s somewhere on here and on thesamba. If you can’t find it, let me know and I’ll gladly email a copy to you.
^ sorted! On the FI circuit you have six vac hoses, whats the condition of them (they are the ones about 3mm inside diameter) ? On our westy, L Jetronic system, if one of these hoses has perished, that will not idle for love nor money and if you try to drive it, it will kangaroo all over the place. Usual locations are the fuel pressure regulator vac hose and the other one, round the back of the throttle body. New hoses and it runs a dream
All nice and brand new bit of silicon lube and they just slide on. I worked out why I couldn't get low revs the cable was to tight still fighting with the idle /mixture and now a dead battery haha is there a way to test the amps coming off the alternator
You've probably just started it a lot and not run it anywhere near long enough to charge. But to see if it works, once you get the engine running the alt light on the dash should go out. You can also check the voltage across the battery with and without the engine running.
I'm definitely getting voltage but only 13v not the 14.4 the regulator says that video of the revs is my dash Also I just braved a little drive around the town drove beautifully a little juddery up a hill but I'm putting that down to mixture. Half way along my drive I remembered my number plates had fallen off
So just took the van out for another spin as the roads were alot quieter. On thing I've very clear I have a very drippy right hand rocker cover and I even used new cork seals. I dont really want to be driving with clouds of white smoke everywher. Haha
