After 15 years at my place I've just been put on consultation for redundancy.
Not completely unexpected to be fair but bugger none the less.

Oh, and they won't accept volunteers, which to me says they've already decided who's going..

  10. My experience, after being made redundant 3 times, is that sometimes they keep on the people who have been there the longest as the redundancy payments can be a lot more than someone who has only been there a few years.

  11. Best of luck. never a good time, but could be the start of something better. What line of work are you in?

  12. Horrible thing to go through - my son was devastated 18 months ago when he was made redundant - but he got 4 months redundancy payout and now has a better job than he had before - so every cloud etc etc.

  13. Consultation in smaller companies is usually a complete farce, some even make it up as they go along, falsifying the minutes of the meetings etc. sometimes its worth going if you are on good redundancy terms had that once, also had statutory redundancy once the payoff was pitiful.

  14. Its important to be positive.

If redundancy comes see it as an opportunity to move on and do something else with your life. I was made redundant and while it was inconvenient at first, I became a much better person and new doors opened up for me as they do. I ended up doing lots of things I would never have done in the old job.

Try to negotiate the best redundancy package if possible and stay on good terms with your employer with no bad feelings, you may well need a glowing reference from them further down the line.

  17. Very true . Seemed like a disaster the first time for me - best thing that could have happened in hindsight , gave me the opportunity to go travelling in the van for 2 years
Second time was my choice , a life changing move to `That London` and started another life wiv mi Julie ;)
Obviously different circumstances for you Doug but if the worse happens look on it as a golden opportunity .

  18. No way dude that sucks

  19. That seems about right . The company set the parameters of the `consultation` , they can chose the criteria of their process - usually sickness , conduct etc etc to suit the employees they want to keep .
It stinks but F-all you can do about it .
Hope it goes the way you want ....

It's a pretty big company, about 14000 employees I think, so you'd think they'd do it all properly. I'm not convinced though..
The redundancy package is what it is. Not statutory but not a whole lot better. It certainly isn't open to negotiation.

To be honest I hate the place. I've been out of it for most of the last 12 years which I've loved. Being back in the office with nothing to do really isn't for me.

I've got redundancy insurance so my overall package would be ok.
What would really annoy me would be surviving redundancy now, getting put in some crap role in London for which I'd have to travel every day, then jacking it in 6 months time because I hated it. Almost better to be pushed now than jump later in the year?!
