Yes. My push rod seal gave out, blowing the oil out, which I saw in my rear view mirror, along with a few orange sparks, which were the piston rings.
Got home on the AA truck, dropped the engine, replaced ALL the rings, then went back down to Cornwall 2 weeks later. (Type 4 1700.).

1700's are great, when I first had mine I did a tank full at 70mph fully loaded up for a 2 week holiday. M11 / M25 / M3. Then stopped for fuel. Stretched my legs, looked back at the bus and it had disappeared in a cloud of burning oil smoke. Carried on when the smoke cleared - no problemo. A 1600 would have self-destructed with that abuse.

I ran the rings in and did 80 mph most of the way back from Cornwall.
Sold it for £1500 more than I paid for it.

  10. Oli said I've got good oil pressure, and good compression......... on cylinders 1,3 & 4.
Absolutely naff all on cylinder 2.
Also, some previous "mechanic" has stuffed an imperial thread pressure switch in so that's going to need sorting out too as the old one has had it.
Going to see him tomorrow for prices.

  11. I met a a guy in the purbecks who rented this miserable looking thing

  13. Years ago I ran into some german nationals Volkswagen testers near Death Valley Nevada. They had all that computer stuff in the car, like your photo . They said it’s so hot and cold at the same time and they can go as fast as they want there and that it was the perfect place for them.

Hope that oil in the back of the bus all came from the exhaust.. or there has to be a new hole somewhere..

  19. I'm responding to zeds post "A 1600 would have self-destructed with that abuse." to which I replied "Mine lasted about 2 weeks! First and last 1600 bus I’ve had". Not sure what your saying to me?

I managed to escape early engine explosions despite going up Birdlip Hill on the A417 and stopping at Cirencester to fill up and seeing a hazy smoke come out of the air vents .. But then I did fit an oil temperature sender and gauge early on not long after that.
And I was aware that the oil needed topping up every fuel fillup because it leaked and burnt so much. Much the same as my old Marina that did 30mpg of petrol and 150mpg of oil .. A tankful of petrol and 5 litres of the cheapest oil going was the usual purchase ..
