Blown it!

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Jaysparx, Feb 12, 2022.

  1. Does anyone know of a decent garage in the Weymouth area, that could help with my blown engine?
The bus has jus died in a cloud of smoke and leaking oil, going up Holden Hill on the A38. I've called the RAC but I'm wondering where I should get her towed to.

    How do you mean,’Blown’?

  6. As in "no power, blowing smoke and oil all over the place" :(

  7. Give Ollie at Beetle Magic a ring. Just outside Dorchester.
Top bloke, straight talking, won't mess you about. Does what he says, when he told you he would.

Push rod tube seal failure, maybe.

  9. Hopefully! But knowing my luck, probably not.
Just spoken to Ollie, she's going to see him when the recovery is sorted.

"No power, blowing smoke and oil all over the place"? Would be nice to think a push rod tube seal would cause that but it sounds a lot worse to me - hole in a piston time more likely or rod through the case.

  11. That was my first fear, but strangely there's no major rattling, clanking or banging from the engine. She managed to get us to a reasonable stopping place with toilets, food etc, just at a steady 20 miles per hour

You lost power because a pushrod tube seal leaked? Or just the smoke and oil. Honestly, I fail to see it unless you lost so much oil it was seizing up.

More like ran out of oil, overheated, holed a piston or two..
20mph on the flat is two working cylinders.
    40-50mph is three working..

Broke a couple of rings. But it was the seal that went first.

  17. The bus has been delivered to Oli. He's going to take a look next week and let me know how many much it's likely to cost to get her going again.
He is, as you said, a top bloke and he's got some lovely cars there at the moment. We had a good chat about the bus and Dubs in general, had to tear myself away to get the train home.
Dead handy him being right by the station!

  18. I checked the oil level at the top of the hill, after she had cooled down a bit. It was still above the bottom line on the dipstick, even though there was plenty on the floor and all up the back of the bus. 20220212_120431.jpg

Did he give you any indication as what it could be/cost!!

  20. Didn't get to him until about half 5 this evening, so he's not going to look at it until Monday. No way of knowing even a ball park figure until he has an idea of what's happened.
