Oli has the go ahead to sort the engine. New pistons and barrels, and all the usual sundries that go with them. And drilling, tapping and fitting an adaptor and new oil pressure sender to replace the bodged one. And possibly a new nose cone oil seal for the gearbox, cos she's dripping a bit from there, too. If anything else shows up during that lot, then he's going to let me know.
In that case why would it need new barrels and pistons? I wanna know if it has a burnt piston simply to see if I guessed right.
Replacing all barrels and pistons does seem odd, esp as the root cause isn’t known (unless I’ve missed something).
Soggz - piston rings Snotty - pulled stud(s) Zed - burnt piston Any more takers in the blown engine sweepstake?
Just honing our skills. You still haven't said what happened to your engine. It's something you would benefit from knowing because many engine failures are caused by the stuff bolted onto them - carbs, distributor etc and you don't want a repeat after the expense of having it fixed.
Still waiting for a definite answer from Oli. I'm not his only customer so I wouldn't expect him to drop everything and put me top of his schedule. He was leaning towards rings or piston gone, hence the costing of new Ps & Bs, but until it's out and apart we won't know for sure.
I was just wondering how he could tell you that you needed new B&Ps without knowing what failed. Seems odd to me, I'd look before jumping to conclusions but maybe Oli has the experience to do that.
I worked for a guy at Desert Springs who rented his house out to vehicle testers. One time I was there when Jaguar were testing. The guys were saying that if you were in the back of the LWb coming back from Carboneras it made you feel queasy due to wallowing in the bends. I liked spotting the cars with camouflage paintwork, and occasionally the ones with cardboard? over to hide the shapes of the car. The boss also said that he had been on the launch of the Ford Capri in the 60’s. They had managed to keep it fairly secret and then when they turned up at the Dolomites to do the secret launch photos another car manufacturer was there!!
To be fair, I asked for a ball park figure of cost before he'd done anything but oil pressure and compression tests. But whatever has happened, I would think that the B & P would have taken the brunt of it and need changing anyway?
Perhaps he quoted worst case, just to set expectations on cost? Would a business like that would get many parts sale or return?
I’d hazard if you can smell the burnt oil then the rings aren’t going to be great after a good cooking.
That’s why I’m thinking do all of the B and P, even if just one set of rings let go. Although when it happened to me, all I did was all the rings, as I was on a budget. Van was fine for many miles after.
