  1. Looks like a good van to get going with, prob just the crankshaft seal needs replacing on the motor and you'll need a big ass torque wrench for that!

    I would be tempted to get an edge setting tool so you can overlap the panels for welding, will give you a bit more metal to go at to get you into it.

    Good start thought and love the previous bodges, they make our life so much easier don't they :/

  3. Yeah the crank case oil seal is on the list to change.

    I've not heard of that edge setting tool, do you have a link to one?

    I've been asking myself that question about the window rubbers as they will now all need to be replaced :mad:

    Unless a PO was low on oil, and found some old stuff at the back of the garage and..........nah, best not go there......

    This weekend it was time to tackle the task of cleaning, stripping and painting the tinware, a job I was not looking forward to. It felt like I was outside for ages sat on a cold floor with a wire brush on the end of a drill.

    Anyway they are starting to look good now. I decided to paint them with Hammerite Smooth as they are a bit rusty and it also means I can paint inside in the warm house rather than out in the cold!

    Re assembly of the engine is not too far away now. I think it might be an idea to have a go at replacing the crank case oil seal soon, before I put everything back on the engine.

    Other bits which need doing before the engine can go back in are:
    1. Paint fuel tank and replace breather system
    2. Paint engine bay

  8. The tins look nice mate, hammerite is nice paint to work with, luckily for you you did it inside, takes aged to dry when it's cold.

  9. One of the heads in your pics looks like it has damage from somthing bouncing around in the combustion chamber at some point

    If the heads not cracked and the pistons fine then you can still use it
    it will just have a slightly different capacity to the other cylinders

    You may find that the vht paint will flake off your exhaust as the kurust you have used will not stand the heat
    Id wire brush it all again with a brush on an angle grinder then go directly onto it with your vht paint
    Myself personally i use black wood burning stove paint for exhausts and heat exchangers

  10. Noted about the Kurust.....however it is all painted now. I'm going to see how it goes as the exhaust isn't too hard to remove once refitted. Stove paint sounds like a good plan though (maybe next time when all the silver falls off!)

    Jobs done:
    New Flywheel oil seal
    Painted fuel tank
    Painted bulkhead panel
    Removed all underseal from engine bay
    Painted engine bay
    and more!

    Hoping to get the engine in next saturday :)

  15. Fuel tank in and connected up, fuel breather system renewed and plumbed in correctly, electrics back in position! Roll on next Sunday.

    I'm still waiting for the head to come back from the engineers with my seized exhaust stud removed so I can start building the engine back up.

  16. Looking good, how long day it take to prep the engine bay?
     
  17. Probably about 3 or 4 full days. I found that a good quality twisted wire brush on an angle grinder got the underseal off best.

    Got the engine in yesterday and now it is running!
