Anyone near Alfreton know a motor factors that stocks our stuff?

  1. Nothing, which is why you need to turn the engine over, so the breakers do their stuff.

  2. Today's another day ...
    I'm predicting you'll have a eureka moment about 10.15

I'm still convinced you have a silly short somewhere, probably in the dizzy. Eliminate my theory by testing as per post #72 .

Dizzy out and onto the green , that way you're checking the whole live side for a short, not just the points...

    I hope so, mate :)
@MorkC68 and I had the dizzy out and checked for the points breakers opening with my meter set to continuity, that checked ok, 4 beeps as the shaft rotated.

We also measured the condenser and it gave a reading of 300nF, my other spare that's missing the little bracket that holds the rubber plug, measured 270nF so that seemed to check out ok, too.

My best thought of the last night was the king lead has a break in it as manually moving the points with the ignition on didn't give a weak spark when we tried that as suggested.

Hot wire straight off the starter battery made no difference either, so it's not my ignition circuit, the starter was still spinning at 8:30pm despite multiple attempts to turn her over.

  4. I'm sure you'll be able to 'adapt' a ht lead and replace the king lead just to test ??

  5. I've got a spare set with me. I must have most parts to build two ignition systems, if only I could build one that worked :oops:

Did you manage to eliminate anything as being dodgy? And is there anything you didn’t try yet?
Ignition module? Dizzy cap? HT leads? Timing being way out? (you said about it Popping and Banging with the spare ‘timed’ dizzy) Coil?
Where is the spark getting lost?
Sorry, I’m not much help, but sometimes if you’ve ended up going round in circles and up dead ends, it works to put everything back as it was initially and start again with one swap at a time. Especially if you’ve got a spare of everything.
    Good luck

  7. Definitely gone around in circles, I have replaced just about everything apart from the king lead and still but been unable to get a spark from #2 plug. New cap, new rotor, several coils, two dizzies, different test plug, changed lead on #2. Put in points and condenser, if it's the king lead all along I'll scream. Problem is as you get colder, wetter, tired, more frustrated and on your own, your judgement starts to drop off. @MorkC68 was a hero, but in truth I'd already been thru the mill by the time he arrived. I was at it all morning from 8 to 1 with a mate helping on the phone, but on my own, then 3 hours with RAC chap, then the cavalry came in the shape of Mork and we got the points right, least I think we did. But I don't think the RAC chap did...bless him, but still no spark at #2.

We did let the engine spin over plenty enough to have seen a spark, it was cranking really well too, no sign of being sluggish when the battery was weakening.

No one to bounce ideas off when you’re running out of steam can be very disheartening, but it’s a bright new day and you can do this! Get breakfast and coffee and think logically.
I know nothing, but if it were the king lead, surely there would be no spark anywhere, not just #2 plug? Also, if it were just one cylinder not firing, it would start? (In amongst the ‘I know nothing’, I know even less about them there type 4 engines)

  10. After you left, Mark, the landlord let me hookup, my leisure batteries charged overnight and my I have energized the split charge relay with a clip lead this morning when I woke up so the starter is recovering as I type.

Mark asked me to nip up to you this morning
Is there anything you've not got we might need this morning you would like me to bring

  12. Any ideas help :) I don't think the spark is making it past, or to, the dizzy, I need to work back from there.

  13. Cheers mate, Mark must have some good friends. Anything ignition wise that you know is good, please, just to try out and fault find. I have most bits, but what I really needs is a fresh pair of eyes and some logic applying.

  15. The RAC chap tested the king lead by energizing the ignition then tapping the lead into the block from the coil. The only thing I can think of is that the lead is damaged but he wasn't old school so was a bit out of his comfort zone, perhaps he made intermittent contact when he flexed the lead and thought it was good, bar that it's ages since I went near points, so I could have got that wrong.

I am not sure what goes wrong on a dizzy, but the float and play seemed ok.

  16. No massive rush, just getting my breakfast and waiting for the starter battery to charge up. I am still recovering from yesterday, in truth. And, thankfully the weather seems to be brightening up :) Perhaps my mood will too....

  17. @lowie I am in the field at the side of the Pub, you can see me from the road, cheers mate and thanks for coming to help :hattip:

  18. We don't get a spark holding the king lead to the block with pliers anyone got any ideas what the cause might be, please? We have 12v at the coil's positive and the coil has ground, checked continuity beep on the meter.

We tried both king leads I have.

    Thanks.

  19. I pmd you my number & can get bits in Sheffield and bring them to you if needed.

Can't offer skilled help, but if it all gets too much I reckon we could tow it to my house where you are welcome to stay. You can put the bus on the drive and fix at leisure or take to a garage and stay at mine until sorted.

What do you mean exactly when you say "the coil has ground"?
