Little braided wire, actually I think only on vac advance distributors between the vac advance plate and main one below. Could be wrong.

  2. Yes only vacuum distributors have the earth wire.
What distributor do you have ?

  3. 009 on this one, I can hear the purists scream

  4. As above an 009, that's why I didn't recognize the wire in question.

It's got me stumped, @MorkC68 out of ideas and the RAC man sulked off home saying he'd be thinking about it all night.

Absolutely stumped, nothing made sense despite checking everything in triplicate.

  6. Where did you hot wire it from ?
Are you sure the coil getting 12v when the engine is spinning over not just when turning the ignition on ?

  7. We hotwired taking a lead direct from the starter battery to the coil positive, she was spinning over lovely but no spark. We both checked, I even talked @MorkC68 into holding the plug, against his better judgement, thankfully he didn't get a shock.

  8. The lovely couple who run the pub I'm camping at, have allowed me to hookup, brought me a beer and generally been absolute stars, can't recommend the place enough

The Sitwell Arms in Morton, cracking spot and it was a lovely break until the trials of today.

  9. What about checking the spark from the coil lead instead of the plug lead ?
could just be that breaking down.

  11. The RAC chap checked that, but I'll do it again tomorrow before I resort the the big yellow taxi. What's the best way of testing the spark at the king lead without getting a bolt?

  14. And just tap it onto an earth to mimic points making and breaking?

  15. or put a zip tie near the end of the lead and use that to hold the lead near the block.

  16. No . you just need to hold the plug om the block so it earths then spin the engine over and watch for a spark.

  17. But if it's the king lead ftom the coil, the dizzy is out of the loop, so to speak, isn't it? What's firing/switching the coil?

  18. Just remove the lead from the distributor cap and leave the other end still in the coil.
Hold the end you removed close to the block while someone spins the engine over andyou should get a good spark from the lead.
If not then remove the lead and use one of the plug leads plugged into the coil and try again.
