  1. The negative terminal of the coil has continuity to chassis ground.

The positive of the coil has 12v

I'm pretty sure mine has a plastic case so I can't see how that could be right...but I'm a dim bulb electrically. If the rain stops I'll check mine does what yours does.

Why I think that's wrong is that if you accidentally put your reverse light on the coil negative, selecting reverse earths it via the reverse switch and reverse bulbs and the engine stops dead. If it's constantly earthed how could it time the spark?

    I'm orf to check. BRB.

If you are getting 12v to the coil, but no spark from the king lead, then surely it's either dead coil or dead king lead. (or the engine isn't earthed to the chassis.)

  5. Bingo she is up and running bit of a cough but she's going, all we did is remove my tacho wire and the sense wire for the Porsche fuel relay and we got a spark oh and changed the condenser.

  6. I wonder if the tacho has a fault that is grounding the ignition signal which is why *******ing about with coil seemed to fix it.

    Good work chaps.
What happens if you replace the tacho wire while it's running?

  8. We have a smoking gun, the trigger wire for the Porsche fuel relay must have worn thru somewhere as soon as that touches the negative of the coil the engine dies, no spark.

No doubt the worn relay wire or whatever will be obvious now you've zeroed in on it.
    A happy and £free ending, TLB at it's finest. @lowie and @MorkC68

Proof that VW know best and the late bay crew can pull together and help in a crisis. Great to see. Enjoy your trip.
