when they did the consultation to this legislation there were only 2000 respondents...

Across the few forums I visit there have been more than 2000 responses to the news..

where was everyone when they had the opportunity to have there say?

  2. I suspect for most of us commenting this is the first we have heard of it.

  3. More than likely, I don't remember it being too well published when I responded to the consultation.

if you have a 60+ year old vehicle and you tax it at the post office you have form v112 for mot exempt vehicles the exemption is for 60+ year old vehicle no mechanical references . bearing in mind very few vehicles of that age are modified , once they realise lots of 40+ vehicles have modified engines the stipulation might be added that vehicles with non standard engines are not mot exempt

  5. I did actually respond to it too so Im one of those 2000. If I recall I became aware of it as someone posted it on here or possibly another forum. cant really recall. That said I didn't receive any communication on this subsequently and it had slipped my mind to check.

  6. As an interesting aside....apparently*, a 'Goods vehicle powered by electricity' is also exempt from MoTs, so I guess a Single/Dual cab pickup or panel van, which has been converted to electric, would be MoT exempt regardless of age...

    * According to DVLA form V112 'Declaration of exemption from MoT'

  7. The problem you will come up against isn't that by law you do or do not need an MOT, its up to the individual underwriter to decided what they require to insure the risk. The insurer can use a legally, government approved system to ensure a vehicle is road worthy, e.g an MOT pass certificate. The issue you would have is how you would go about proving a vehicle is roadworthy without an MOT, and knowing how slippery insurance companies are, good luck with that! For my 1958 PanelVan, I could not get one single insurance company to offer me cover without an MOT. I had no intention of driving without an MOT, I just asked of morbid curiosity.

So it all boils down to what is meant by modified.

Is adding a towbar or a leisure battery, for example, a modification or moving the spare wheel from back to front, or installing electronic ignition?

  9. Or changing the wheels?

My dad has 2 Austins that are nearly 90 years old, obviously tax and MOT exempt, the insurance company have never asked questions about wether they are roadworthy or not,

I really don’t know, he’s 85 and has never had a blameworthy accident, so he keeps telling everyone and their dog

But the insurance policy will almost certainly state that the vehicle must be maintained in a roadworthy condition.

But if the government decides a car doesn’t need to have a MOT who decides if it’s roadworthy or not
