  1. Ffs man its given us something mildly interesting to talk about thats actually related to us all having buses. Stop applying logic or were all back to reading @Barry Haynes drivel about his chelsea pensioners and fishing.

For the sake of getting an MOT which should be a prerequisite for ALL vehicles, its not such a big deal is it... would you buy a VW T2 without an MOT you would have to be off your tree.. even lots of the MOTd ones are questionable ...

  6. Bloody nanny state making us not have MOTs to save us money in reward for maintaining historic vehicles for prosperity. Makes my blood boil! You could have written a list of names of those who wouldnt be bothered, those who would be pragmatic and those who believe the world will end if they dont have an mot right at the start and you wouldnt have been far off. Funny how everyones happy to get free road tax!

    £45 v £230
One ensures your bus is safe to be on the road, one is just a tax.
I know which I'd rather do without.

  8. Nope. Not with you there. Isnt it both or nothing. Guess im getting confused as you could be mot and tax exempt still, who knows so its possibly zero, with £45 for an optional mot, or £275 for something that doesnt comply. Doesnt really make tyat much difference to me really. Its just the convenience factor.

I can't see them removing tax exemption for those that already have it. Who knows, maybe they will.

  10. If you don't have to get an MOT for a vehicle then why would a vendor bother to MOT it?

  11. Pample doesn't get out much for various reasons...........ie

    A) 'lets go to the '''''''festival@'''''''' .......Oh bugger, the van's not taxed, thats another £140+,ooh, a lot for a festival..

    B) Oh lets go away to Cornwall next weekend,......Oh bugger, we didn't tax it and now the blinkin MOT has run out, oh well its now late September prob wait till next year, coz we won't use it over winter......

    IMAGINE

    A) yeah, that'll be fun, I'll drag the bus out the garage.

    B) Ok, that'll be fun, I'll drag the bus out of the garage.

    Can't wait for 2018.

  12. There's nothing in the DoT documentation to suggest that they are planning on applying the stated definition of "substantially modified" to exclude vehicles from historic vehicle status. Therefore, this is just about the MOT.

  13. Cant see how a vehicle that is considered to be "substantially modified" and wearing a Q plate can also be a historic vehicle. The points system is pretty transparent and easy to interpret - no 8 points = q plate & mot & tax and no historic status

  14. Whats the 8 point system, gotta link?

It's all getting a bit confusing going between them.

What's making me chuckle is if I manage to get the paravan road worthy
It will only need insurance and off I can legally go.

If I do get to keep it I will still take it once a year for a pre mot check at a local old school garage

There's things like brake imbalance that you can't detect at home

  16. Thanks having quickly read this the two are separate. I can put a Subaru engine in and I reckon I still have 13 points. Note I am still using the original gearbox and have not lowered the suspension. but the substantially modified bit relates to power to weight ratio.

  17. they are separate issues. best of luck with getting the bus ready ... imagine when you drive it you won't know if the sloppy steering is meant to be like that or not.

  18. Are we all missing the point !!! Is this just to make it easier for the modern MOT station, lets be honest there aren't many proper mechanic's left ,setting timing, points .balancing carburetters etc etc . same with the MOT the modern day mechanic has very little understanding of older vehicles and the way they work are engineered etc etc . more conveinient for the modern test station that need to turn an MOT round in 20-25 mins just keep to the modern stuff ,less hassle more profit. If an older vehicle fails an MOT , most places don't want to be hassled trying to rectify the problems because they lack experience IMHO. Any taker's on this ? or should I get my coat and go quietly ? .........................................................:hattip:

By the way been really busy of late, and not been on here for a few good weeks ....:D

But likewise they're not going to retrospectively force the 8 point system or Q plates.
