1978 Rustfalia

  1. Floor came up nice with a wire wheel and a few good cleanings. A couple small holes and the seam weld at top right was swollen with rust. But for now, a little POR 15 and some seam sealer in the holes... I can't have the bus down and out since i used it everyday to get the kids to school and myself to work. One day it will get a proper resto, i hope. For now, preservation and keep enjoying it!

in the mean time... looks just like an original Westy cabinet only 16" deep and about 6 inches shorter! Yes, that's right, I butchered my original cabinets.. what are you gonna do about it?

Looking for a full width Westy bed so that my 3-point belts will work on both sides of the bus...

  5. My seat is near done, just needs upholstering.

Plenty of storage, no need for a cabinet!

    Full width bed soon!

  6. Sacrilege on the cabinet. The world will crash on you shoulders !
Like the seat though. It's a great idea.

  7. Yup, i am a terrible person. First i cut the cabinet, then decided not to use it. Terrible.

  8. Well, I've now got a second project bus:

This will be a ride-on toy for my son Kai's 3rd birthday next week. Now, Kai likes his buses like I do - slammed. But while I have maintained a modicum of practicality by keeping the ride height conservative, Kai is not about practicality. For him it's all about getting it on the ground and having the lowest bus around. F@#K practical - he's 3 and just wants to live life to the fullest.

So far, the usual problems with lowering a bus have occurred. front end had to be heavily narrowed to accommodate the ride height and still allow it to steer. Frame was modified accordingly. back end had to match and again, if you want to tuck this much rim out back you gotta get narrow. First cut had the axle ends rubbing on the arches. So out came the chop saw and we narrowed the rear too. naturally, the inner fender wells had to go all around.. maybe some tubs and seats at some point, but for now i gotta get this thing in some paint!

  12. over the last few weeks, I have renewed most of my interior: Full width bench, new jumpseat, mounted the old swing out table as a flip up table, cut down the shore power mount to accommodate the armrest. The new woodwork is all birch ply to match the ceiling (which had some white vinyl laminate but it has peeled off to show the wood beneath).

i will redo the table and make a low profile overhead cabinet at some point, and some day match up the seat fabric.

  13. It would be a shame to get rid of my hacked up westy cabinet, so...

    Rolling westy toolbox!

  14. Made a low profile ceiling cabinet for my rear speakers..just gotta wire them up and peel the rest of that white off the ceiling!

  15. be careful when you brake buddy, that stuff would fly off, and in an accident it would fly forward at some force, i know its only towels etc but still

  16. Coming along nicely. You are setting your van up very "livable" nice !!

  17. Put her to work hauling bark mulch last weekend.. 1/2 yard feels very heavy indeed when towed behind a bus.

Thankfully, it should get only marginally fuller if we stay more than 1 night!

  20. Nice, I like the one fog light up front. Looks like a great ride height. You'll have to start looking for one of those single wheeled trailers to pull along the bits that don't fit in, when going for a few nights. LOL
