  1. ...and again,

She got all the way from Lincoln to the F1 in Belgium and back to just north of the Dartford tunnel. I've blown an oil seal somewhere, I'll take the engine out tomorrow. Looks like the flywheel oil seal, I had a vibration through the gear nob and rough noise for a while before it went.

  2. I've not round to dropping the engine yet, but I have dumped what oil was left and it's not pretty. There is a very fine swarf in the oil. Looking at where it came from it looks like the flywheel oil seal has gone.

Something more serious than flywheel oil seal to loose most of the oil I think? Though maybe loosing oil accelerated wear which accelerated loosing oil in a vicious circle of destruction! :(

Vibration and rough running/noise + metal float in the oil = bearing gone. Big end is favourite on a long trip.

Turn pulley and try on various positions to rock it clockwise and back. If there's a bit of loose (particularly away from TDC where there is always some to be felt) - big end most likely.
Grab pulley (with belt removed) and rattle from side to side/up and down. It shouldn't move but if it does - mains.
Grab pulley and push pull in and out. Again should be barely discernable movement - mains.

I guess you have a drain plug in the plate and used that to drain the oil? If yes, try removing the plate and gauze filter and see if you find any big chunks of bearing?
    :(

  4. Love your van

    cheers O0

  5. Cheers!

Still not got round to dropping the engine yet due to work and now its raining! Really not looking forward to finding the problem, hope its not too big or expecsive.

But cheers zed for the things to check list.

I'll start a thread in Mech/Tech so as not to clogg up the ride thread with tech stuff.

  6. If you saw my tech thread about my engine destroying itself you know it's dead.

So to get me back on the road while I save for a bigger engine, I've bought a cheep engine off eBay! I pick it up on Saturday.

A bargain at £150! Just a 1600 with no top on it, so I've to remember how to put it back together! LoL!
It was sold with a video of it running before removal. Removed for a bigger engine.

    Happy!

  8. right place wrong car

  9. although you are 180 degrees out

  10. While waiting for a mate to come and help lift the engine out of the car (I have a very bad back) I tidied the garage and started stripping the bad "rat" paint job off my tin...

  11. First off, I've hit a problem witht the replacement engine.

The fuel pump plastic stand has gone/is brittle and broken up leaving a bit left in the case!
    Here is a photo...

Apart from that I took the heads off and it all looks ok. Looks like its been running a bit rich...

  12. just a bit rich!! can you tap into the fuel pump bit and pull it out that way? or just some needle nose pliers?

  13. The stand has shattered!
I've given it a flush with oil and turned the crank. There is no noise or restriction so I guess the big bits are in the bottom of the case.

I still don't want to split the case so I've just ordered an oil pump puller off eBay.

The bits should be sat behind it looking at the case casting of the old engine.

Other then that I've been valve lapping,

    ...and rebuilding,

Here is the reason my wife won't go in the garage. It's organised chaos.

  15. Today's fun and games...

A little paint on the tin with subtle art, I put one coat on then placed the skull on it and gave it two more coats. I know the engine gubbins will cover most if it, but it amuses me,
    [IMG]

...and now my metal skull thing has a new paint job.

One of my favourite engine jobs, not sure why. I possibly don't get out enough,
    [IMG]

    Spot the mistake here,
    [IMG]

...yep, forgot the barrel tin wear!

...and that's where I am today!

Just waiting for my oil pump puller in the post tomorrow and I'll fish out the oil pump stand bits. Then build the rest!

  16. There we go!
Loads of bits sat just behind the oil pump!

  17. ...and they're out!

Built up a bit more today, just have a few exhaust stud issues to sort.

Not sure if I'm going to leave the plate on the engine or maybe put it on the rear bumper, that I'm still to fit.

I hope you also didn't forget the tin under the barrels/above the pushrods that clips onto the studs...
