Type 4 lifters (as that's what they are) are a real pain for the rods not sitting in the centre of the cup... I often rotate the engine so the head is upright for dropping the rods and tubes in
screwdriver under the pushrod is a good way to pop them up... you'll need to have virtually no tension on the pushrod to pop them into place though!!
so you were right @Paul Weeding theu werent sitting right. I swore i put them in the cups carefully! Anyway set tappets to 1.5 full turns, and tried to start her up. Reluctant to start, after a lot of trying, there was a couple of tick overs, but very weak. Going to do a compression test tomorrow morning so will see what that brings up. If its head gasket, i am tempted to sell as unfinished project as i just have too much else to do with work and building the other engine.
no.1 was at 10 Bar before so i would double check the valves and redo it. i reckon they could now all be ok just a bit of tweaking I know on an aircooled a lot of people just adjust the tappets until they touch not the extra 1.5 turns
How long did it run for ? I would set the followers at zero turns for the first run gives them a little settling room, with those figures it should still run ok, is the timing etc ok? Is the choke coming on?
i have readjusted to just touching. Non start. All i can smell is petrol worried i am flooding the carbs. How am i going to get it to start!!!!!!!! bloody thing. anyone wanna buy it?
I think the mixture is rich but I also think that from lack of starting the spark plugs are sooted up.
You want them all to be about the same. Normally within 10 psi, does you gauge only do bar? Clean the plugs, and double check the valves on no.1, it was ok before so should adjust up ok now.
I have adjusted 1 and when it went in two turns it had no compression. On touching it has 6 bar. It does psi it shows on the paper I photocopied initially. @pkrboo
Just easier to see if its in psi. Considering no.1 was 10 to start with I would say head gasket and cylinder is ok. Not suee what to suggest next.....@davidoft
I would pull all the plugs out either tonight, or first thing in the morning, clean them and let the cylinders breath , if it's really flooded which it could well be its will be near impossible to start. Leave the plugs out for an hour, just for my curiosity how are you determining number one is on compression when setting the valves, position of the rotor arm + timing mark ? Is the timing mark the case join? It's been a while I can't remember 100%
Position of rotor arm pointing at the notch. @davidoft Also just posted a video of the choke. Not sure how much it should open but I pulled throttle fully on that.
