  1. Spent nearly 4 hours trying to get the rear silencer off and got precisely one nut ground off.
This could be long and painful......:(

  2. Yes, just a small split at the corner, there must be a solid steel piece at the lower corner between the double panel, water must have got in and rusted the piece, as it expanded it split the outer panel.

I was looking for a before image, but can't find one :(

  3. Get some of these, I was sceptical but can honestly say they’re one of the best tools I ever bought, works every time! Including dodgy cv bolts that have rounded off inside

  4. Cheers, the problem on a type 4 exhaust is theres no room between the silencer and the HX to get a socket on:(

Yes, it's baaaad. Not even easy to remove it c/w HXs unless you're not opposed to a little violence because the head studs with regard to the engine splay out a bit, but that might be your best option. You can then at least try and cut them off with a sharp bolster and lump hammer and you should be able to cut through partly with a grinder. It's not the time to say it, but it does help if you use s/s (a bit grabby) or copper nuts.

  6. Cheers Steve, I'm in the process of grinding away at the nuts with a multi-tool and then using a chisel to knock them off. That certainly worked on the first one so I shall persevere, I've ordered a new tool with a flexi-drive so that should help with access a bit. Luckily I have the patience of a saint:rolleyes:

  7. Slightly better shape than mine, then :( Front steps and closing panels are my main areas of rot, apart from - as with yours - water creeping into seams. Purely cosmetic, but a right pain.

Drove it home from a nice long weekend away, and nearly gave myself third degree finger tip burns from the O/S rear brake drum.
    *sigh*
Any ideas where to start, oh well-informed people of TLB?
I'm assuming jack it up, wheel off, drum off, have a look?

Jack up, chock, handbrake off - does it turn freely? Problem if you set the brakes a little bit draggy is they heat up, expand and drag even more... or did you drive home with the handbrake on? Been there done that.

haha, yep done that once too! But no, I didn't leave the handbrake on. (not that it works particularly well anyway, this too is on the list to sort out)
All three other wheels were nice and cool, just the one drum was red hot.
I'm assuming caliper issue? This is the first time I've noticed it, so I think whatever has broken / stuck / leaked etc has done it relatively recently.
I might go and have a quick look now..........

No, it's not turning freely all the way around - quite nice and free for about 180* / 270* and then stiffens up for the rest of the rotation.

  16. Sounds like your drum may have gone a bit oval, are they new?

No they're original, and only skimmed last year when they were repainted - they were in pretty good nick. Ouch.

Could be you need to replace that handbrake cable, they do seize up and when they do they neither work, nor let go properly.
    Drums don't have callipers, that's a disc thing. ;)

  19. Just whip the drum off (while may be a tussle) and see what carnage there is inside
