Want a type 4 but put off by experts?

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Dicky, Oct 13, 2017.

  1. clearly it should be cheaper and easier to change a type 1 to a type 4 as opposed to a Subaru. although in part depends on the spec of the Type 4 engine. Of course there is then the discussion of what cost means as its not necessarily a financial calculation.

    Define cost effective?
If the question is is it more expensive to go scooby then the answer is yes, yes it is.

  3. Be good to see a proper break down in cost, rebuilt type 4 vs Scooby.

Based on mileage etc. What do the Scooby engines get to the gallon in a bus vs type 4?

    Cost of buying, rebuilding etc.

So not a cost to just do it but a cost to do it and do several thousand miles.

Gets complicated I guess as some service their own, some dont know what end the engine is :)

  4. i think if you do a full rebuild on a type 4 with powder coating tins and all the other shiny stuff, then it is comparable in costs to doing a scooby swap.

    I know mate.
The funny thing is that the scooby-trolls as I like to call them generally know f*** all about f*** all!

  9. doing all of mine was less than having just an engine done by fellows. and people have easily spent 4k on a type 4 so its getting there!!

  10. @Razzyh spent shed loads on his Type 4

for me the cost includes not having to worry

  11. Thats the problem, mine probably cost £700 and is fine, there is no comparison, some can do it themselves others cant.

  13. your just a lucky chap ... any chance of the lottery numbers ... some can but just haven't the time or desire. since I have had mine converted to s****u I've used it loads more for what I bought it for ... and camping in it next weekend as well to me that's preferable to spending time underneath the thing.

  14. I fell into my own trap if thats what i asked. I meant is a type 4 install from scratch as costly as a subaru install for your average punter whos blown his type 1!
