why do lorry drivers think they have the right to block lanes?

    To answer the original question.

Some drivers block the lanes to stop the congestion ahead of them. They can usually see the bottleneck before the car drivers and think by blocking the lane it gives room ahead for the congestion to clear, They are thinking about themselves in most cases, and creating a bigger bottleneck behind, The proper signs at further distances ahead might help in most cases, sometimes it's just not possible or how a badly planned road works ( or not ) in rush hour.

The logical solution would be to fill both lanes and mesh in together at the last minute. What actually happens is people get the arse and fight for position at the last minute causing the bottleneck at the point of entry. The lorry drivers are attempting to make people get in lane earlier and avoid this. Sometimes it helps, sometimes not.

You could argue that people getting into lane nice and early causes the problem. They leave a nice empty lane, make the queue longer and there will always be people that shoot down the outer lane, either because they are impatient dicks or they see the logic in filling the empty space.

  4. I had the done to me at Stonehenge, there was just enough room, so I squeezed my car down the side, then the truck decided to swerve and run me off the road into the central reservation..............I got out and tackled the driver who though best to lock himself in the cab, so I rang the police and rang his office and reported him for dangerous driving!

  5. The difference between professional lorry drivers as apposed to you and me is.................they get paid for it!

We've had this discussion before but one of the funniest things I've seen regarding an arrogant trucker was on the M42 2 lane section.
2 truck drivers were fighting for supremacy for mile after mile after mile; the queue behind getting longer and longer. This went on for a good 4 or 5 minutes. Eventually one got past the other and pulled back into the inside lane.
The guy in the Golf who'd been first in the queue pulled in front of the pair of trucks and gradually bought them to a complete halt.
He then wound his window down, gave the driver the bird, and drive off.
I for one gave him a round of applause as I passed.

The problem is the speed restrictor hgvs come off Immingham docks fully laden when they join the a180 it's a long section where the road climbs this is where you get one hgv going at 55mph being overtaken by another doing 56mph causing a long tail back! mind you on the a1 south of Newcastle there are sections where hgvs are banned from doing this during the day

  9. ^^^ this.

    It's a road, not a queue.

As per the highway code, use both lanes until you need to merge, then merge in turn - not only is it the correct procedure it's also the most efficient in terms of traffic flow and minimises congestion.

i should say the original post i wrote was not about roadworks, it's a correctly signed section where a road goes from 2 to 1 lanes, i agree sometimes lorry drivers benefit the road behind from their vantage point but in the instance i am talking about which happens most days it is a lorry driver being a knob for the sake of it to stop people diving in last minute - now as i said i don't like those types either but my 1st post was commenting on how these types of lorry driver decide (in my opinion) to become the law.

Nothing gives him the right and tbh and I agree with you regarding the law bit. He sounds like a bit of a dope.

As a side. Most road users - all genres - are thankfully pretty good on the whole, but when we are all trying to just get on with our journey, one idiot will stick out like a sore thumb. The roads, my job and cars are all so different nowadays. Gone are the days of chivalrous driving or Knights of the road. Sad, but true.

You are supposed to merge last minute.
There's one at the start of the M32 down here. It's a bloody nightmare because if you drive down the outside and try and merge in the right place you get idiots closing the gap and not letting you in. I bet they then go and start threads on forums moaning about people "diving in last minute".

Here in lies the problem. A lot of people won't let a car in at the last minute and try to race through the gap. It leaves the cars/trucks on the blocked lane queuing. How do you overcome this?

  14. "merge in turn" signs would help but unfortunately you can't stop bad drivers/idiots.

Pretty much what I said too. I have noticed better signs on the motorways of recent and people do get over sooner. You still get the few idiots racing up the clear lane to beat the queue though.

That's the opposite of what I said.
There shouldn't be a clear lane, and getting over sooner increases queue length. You should merge where the lanes merge to make maximum use of available road space!
If you weren't supposed to use the filter section, it wouldn't be there.

It's all well and good applauding idiots like that ( cos he was no matter if he seemed good at the time ) but what about the idiot who came on to the slip road the other night and because I couldn't move over without wiping a car out at the side of me, waited until he got on the motorway, overtook me and slammed his brakes on, He had a kid in the back and I nearly went straight through him. Would you applaud that idiot too. It is the next step from what the bloke in the Golf did. Bad driving is bad driving and all our lives at risk from these idiotic actions.

Btw I don't applaud wagon drivers who do similar stupid things either.

Seems to me like the Golf driver was, no matter how cautiously he slowed. You just don't do that or any other action that causes friction intentionally.

God. I sound like some ruddy holier than thou preacher. I am just concerned that safety on the roads is paramount. I have made every mistake in the book in my time. I just see it differently now and wish people could see some of the stuff I see and the nasty results. I can't wait to finish my driving and hang up my yorkie bar.
