  1. Wrestled CSP heater pipes in. What a beggar of a job. The bleeding seems to have stopped now...

On sunday I picked at some cracks in the bodywork filler; level with nearside battery tray and its rust, then filled and painted the hole resulting from that.
    Checked the oil level.

  4. Nothing serious, just one of the unions has a slight leak that makes my mudflap go all wrinkly. Out with the PTFE tape...

Really pleased with how the filter head works - very neat, and a cheap oil cooler. I’d recommend the blue Aeroquip hose - tough as old boots.

  5. Cheers for the advice on the hose
I’ll need to be sorting this for mine when the engines built.
Have you had any trouble with the barbed fittings?
I’ve read some horror stories of hoses blowing off when the oils cold
Also what route have you used for your hoses to filter housing?

  6. Off out now, but I'll post pics later. Pretty straightforward and robust.

He's had a bit of a shakeout with his Bournemouth runs - unfortunately appears to have shaken out my front alternator bearing. Gah!

  8. I drilled holes in my "new" front beam.
I'm finally going to waxoyl it and use the sexy little plugs that Lord @snotty of Andover donated to me about a year ago:rolleyes::D:thumbsup:

    Slow progress round ere

  9. They've probably gone mouldy

  10. All back together, lashings of PTFE tape, hopefully leak free.

    Broke down in it!

A slightly more eventful journey back to March in Iris last night than I would have hoped! Just outside Oxford pulling away from a set of traffic lights the engine started popping like a steam engine. Pulled over as soon as I could and found she’d spat out #1 spark plug .

Cue half an hour of me having to remove one of the studs holding the inlet manifold to the heads as I’d put it in upside down and couldn’t get the spark plug socket in to tighten the plug back up. Plug reinstalled and carefully nipped up. We drove the remaining 90 miles at 45-50 to take it easy on her without issue.

I’m hoping I’d just not tightened the plug enough when I put the engine back together a few months back and it worked it self loose. Worse case it’ll have stripped the threads (given it tightened up ok I’m hoping it hasn’t) and I’ll need to fit a helicoil.

No major damage except a burnt knee from brushing up against the exhaust, and a dented ego.

All part of the fun of driving an old van right?

Thank you Max for keeping the dog amused and feeding me Quiche whilst driving down the A421.

  12. It’s a rite of passage for Bay owners. It’s just telling you there’s another thing that needs fixing.

Try torquing the plug up to the stock 25 ft lbs. If it holds, it holds, if it doesn’t it’s fixable (although I’d use an insert on plugs, rather than a helicoil).

If you’re ever around Rownham services at 1:30 in the morning, we could have a breakdown party on the hard shoulder

Cheers mate. I’m going to take a look this morning. It held for 90 miles so I’m optimistic, but it’s all fixable.

  14. Finger crossed. If do need to fix it, I’ve got a Sealy insert kit you can have a go of. Often down in sunny B’Mouth - give us a shout if you need it.

Its best to get hoses made up with crimped on end fittings.
I use pairs of jubilee clips and random hose fittings off eBay. Some of them were really meant for crimp on hose. On one occasion at -3 degrees it popped a hose off the oil cooler. The oil on the ground was moving so slowly I seem to remember being able to sort of shovel it up..
Later investigation revealed the jubilee clips were not done up very tightly and the hose hardened slightly and I had knocked it. Same hoses still staying put years later once properly tightened.

On the plus side I did get to use the Hellas properly for the first time! Think I need to align them a little better.
