I understood about the solenoid. I don't favour taking the live from the coil. As with the reversing light, I'd rather take a cable from a dedicated fuse in the main fuse box, hence some of the extra cables in the main loom. I've plenty of spare ways in the fuse box.
I've never done a split charge before. I'd planned to take a short lead from the battery to a 3rd fuse box (6 way) close by in the engine bay and then feed the fridge, USB chargers etc from that. Why do you need a big fuse before the fuse box? There isn't a similar big fuse for the cable from the starter battery to the front fuse boxes. Am I being dippy?

  2. VW didn’t put one in, but should have, in a perfect world. I’ve never liked that long run of completely unfused cable...

  6. It’s just one of the generic ones. Nice big rubbery bit on the top to hold the battery down.

  7. Wondered if it was possible to sand, compound and polish a brush painted finish to a decent shine. Yep, it is but a serious amount of work without a machine.

  8. I am lucky if I get a spare hour to do repairs on the camper but every little bit done is better than nothing...
Just a quick panel made and welded on the arch, rear quarter..

  10. I was happy enough using starter batteries as LBs (normally have hookup) but swapping batteries over each day off grid isn't what it's all about so I've just fitted a Halfords hlb800. Bit tight but goes in nicely.
£116 with a trade card for a 'Class A' rated battery so it will work well.

Drove her to work Monday and Tuesday this week. Beautiful weather down in Poole at the moment. Back on the bike for the next few days to try and get post-resto fit.

Na still have the interior to do! Electrics, upholstry etc. But no more countless nights on my own down the workshop. Will be doing most of it at home now.
There is however now room for a Baja in the workshop! :p

I was dead glad when all the wires were on fire that the starter battery had a loose clamp and the 100 amp breaker on the leisure battery had a manual trip button..

  19. That cable to the front gives me the willies. At least modern motors have 60A fuse on top of the battery.

  20. Gave the rear bumper a sand, derust and some primer and gloss white. Bit tidier than before. :)
