Fetched it back with an MOT pass from Kevin at SGS Aircooled. He is certainly busy, lots of buses and Beetles around being worked on.

Some welding on front cross member. Headlight alignment.

Loaded it up with what looks like about 2 tonne of stuff for a week in Croyde.
    Happy days

When I got it home , I decided to replace the fuel filler elbow by the tank.

I have badly scraped arms. I had to bend the firewall to get a hand round the end to do up the clamp at the tank end.

The VWH elbow is a bit short and I had to slide the metal filler elbow down a fraction to give me more metal to slide it over. But the VWH part slides into place nicely over the metal pipes with a bit of wiggling.
Despite expectations the worst bit was not fitting the new part.
It was persuading a bent firewall back into the slot at the top...

Next time I will take the engine out.

    Owwwwwwww.

Found the rubber bit that goes from the fuel filler cap to the metal elbow has split. Smeared it with silicone for now.

And then I changed the section of fuel hose under the bus between the shutoff valve and the solid tube through the firewall.

I was going to do more but the hose clamps I had were all either the wrong size or corroded.

I want nice ones to go with the Goodrich 200 fuel hose...

Fitted a switch to isolate the solar cells as my cheap eBay charger doesnt properly isolate them.

Made a diffuser out of plastic from a 5 litre screen wash bottle to cover a bulkhead light fitting I head butt from time to time , once hard enough to shatter the old diffuser.

Fitted a new LED light under the headbanger to replace an old fluorescent lamp that the diffuser had gone coffee brown on.

Fitted new gas hose to the gas cylinder.

  5. Bought new window regulators and headlight trims from @Lasty, also ordered new screws for the spare wheel carrier as I can't find the ones I got last year, though I'm bound to find them now I've ordered new ones.

  6. Yesterday we loaded up for our now annual 2 week trip to the isle of Wight. Last night I completed my seat 'refurb'. . I used some seat cushions from ikea and covered them with orange tee shirts my wife found.

Today we left at 5am to get the 7 o clock sailing. Van ran well to the ferry, but started sounding awful this afternoon. So the first spanner session of the holiday has already been completed. The right hand carb had worked loose, and the push rod from my centre mount linkage was pushing the carb away before opening the throttle causing an Air leak and out of balance carbs. Everything tightened up now, and I reset the linkage by eye. The only thing I didn't bring with me this time was my carb synchroniser. [IMG]

  7. Never go on holiday without a carb synchroniser, I always say.

  8. Went for a tootle down the lanes to Romsey to swap a slightly wonky hub cap. Van just romps along, although does have a slightly unnerving rattle from his rear end. Exhaust, snorting Dells, wobbly cam? To be investigated.

Got home, decided to cut out the two smaller pieces of engine compartment sound insulation I'd forgotten all about, from my fancy foam. Cut neatly to size (with tongue stuck out, didn't go over the lines)...then realised I'd done them mirror image, so the sticky side was facing down. Duh. I mean, duh.

  11. Three trips to Blackgang Chine today( long story) 33 miles worth. All is well, although firing him up in the car park at closing time had people scattering. Guess they don't know what a 'real' car sounds like any more. . It was a sea of mpv's with roof boxes.

  12. Took it for an Mot. Passed without any negative observations apart from a small oil leak from os of engine. Bloody pushrod tube seals. T4 so I’ll replace when I get a chance.
He also said it’s running a bit rich. I’ll take that rather than running lean and ruining valve seats.
