It is far easier to get back in if you drop the bellhousing down a bit by removing the two top mounting bolts, makes lining up the engine on the shaft easier and those two bolts have a 5mm unthreaded on the end which helps get them started back in on the captive nuts, just don't let the box hang by its front mounts!

Ordered a new Woodruff key for the alternator. Realised one of the reasons the alternator pulley clanks is the Woodruff key I was using actually shows signs of being hammered thinner by rattly pulleys.

Drove it to work again - I started work at a new place 6 weeks ago and have only failed to drive the bus to work about four days when it rained at first.

My friend in the Environment Agency suggests this weather pattern is leading to a drought this year.

  5. Installed some 14.4W warm white LED strip left over from a job in someones house in a nice flush profile on my new shelf unit thing I made :)
also hot glue gunned a couple of sections into the interior light housing and connected up to the existing terminals to replace the filament lamp :)

Managed to carry out a job with the bits I bought when I first got the bus 4 years ago.
The first JK order I put in for engine parts when rebuilding I also ordered a reverse light kit.
Fitted the gear box sender, tee'd into the existing copex conduit running from front to back, pushed in the 2 cables and connected up to each rear light.
Well chuffed, now people will realize I am reversing and stop saying, oi mayte yer reversing lights out blud....... as the yooof/yobs do these days.

  6. Cheers, top tip.

The PO has removed the rod, thermostat, brackets and flaps for me it seems! It's on the list of jobs!!

  7. Is the flat section just plate or is it a repair panel? Might save making one if it's a ready to weld part?

  9. after breaking down the other day, we roadside checked fuel, spark etc and the suspect fault was the accuspark ignition module.
fitted the new one today and it fired right up no problem.
just waiting on eurocarparts to deliver the new driveshafts and i can go out for a test drive.

whilst i had my tools out if fitted new accuspark plugs, leads, a new dizzy cap and rotor arm :)

also reloaded my roadside tool kit with a few additional spares and tools :)

  11. a little bit more engine build today, not far to go now but no rush....
this is where I'm up to
    20170427_174438.jpg

heads didn't want to go on straight but then I figured they wouldn't because of the pushrod tubes, sorted in the end...
    20170427_175932.jpg
did come across a small problem as the new cooling tins under the barrels where making contact with the tubes and needed bending the correct way, unless I've done something wrong that is.....was not happy as I dented the tubes making them clear.... 20170427_174532.jpg 20170427_174555.jpg

I'm claiming it to be manufacturer error.......

  12. Aftermarket tin (if that's what it was) usually needs a bit of fettling. Nice work!

  13. yes new tins as the old ones were held on by wire(not my doing) but not to happy having to hit them with a hammer though.

  14. I bought a bit of the curved undertin from VWH, and on the first trial fit all the captive nuts fell off

  15. replaced the oil and filter today, used 20W/50 for the first time

also refitted the old driveshafts as eurocarparts still messed up my order.

now ordered in 4 GKN Lobro CV Kits with boots @£24 each (special price because of the mess about) and have sourced 2 replacement shafts used genuine VW for free, i can make them up without taking the bus off the road and then swap over then flog on my originals :)

  16. Made more neighbour annoying noise with the grinder and then gently adjusted some panels with a 2lb pien hammer. Bet they re really looking forward to the weekend now. Oh ran the compressor for what appeared to them was the hell of it.:D

Good one you spotted that - if you leave the deflectors touching, they will eventually buzz a small hole in the push rod tube which leaks oil...

This morning I cleaned up the nearside front brake pads which were binding, after fixing the offside ones on Thursday.
Coming back from Techenders it pulled slightly left. Near a ditch with an oncoming car it pulled violently left... . After fixing offside brake it pulled violently right at the oncoming car in a similar situation ....
Both re copaslipped and it stops straight with a much firmer pedal.

  19. Bled the brakes again then took Cyril for a drive. After breaking hard and everything winding up either in the cab or on the floor I guess the new calipers are a success!
