  3. Tomorrow! It's an anti-theft measure - Sage Green is such a revolting colour, none of the local chavs will nick them

  8. greeted the postman with open arms as he had my new accuspark unit, only to discover on opening that i had ordered the unit for an sdva dizzy, not the 009 i have :( will have to re order monday now and it should turn up weds.
Also went to Eurocarparts to pick up a pair of GKN Lobro complete driveshafts after mine were rumbling following my strip down and rebuild, but alas, the ones they ordered in were for a T25 and too long.
Can anyone give me the required measurement for a bay driveshaft?

  9. Got as far as finding the 36mm socket in the shed so I can have a go at undoing my fan in-situ so I can change the dynamo.

Tomorrow I might get as far as trying to use it!

Just take care you dont shear a washer trying to be a Woodruff key on the alternator shaft- by the time I got anywhere turning the 36mm nut I had the pulley well and truly jammed on the other end.

It is actually easier to take off the inlet manifold and carburettor and lift the fan housing a bit after undoing the themostat so you can pop the oil filler off the studs. Then the fan comes out with the alternator or dynamo directly back without pulling the engine.

Like so many processes with a VW , starting in the middle of what would have been the original assembly sequence often takes longer than going to one end of the sequence and performing three times more steps , all of which are possible rather than trying one move which if you have a total SNAFU leads you to do even more work than the long winded disassembly.

Like take the engine out then its very easy as you dont have the fight with the oil filler stand with the method I described here, or the indescribable horror of getting enough torque to undo the 36mm nut totally blind while trying to lock the alternator pulley the other end without bending it or shearing the Woodruff key in the shaft... Because some idiot did it up with a rattle gun.

  13. Cheers, gave it a go but it's clearly to tight to shift.

Next the engine is coming out!

  16. After a week away, I'm back on the beam. Successfully split the track rod end from the spindle, and removed the steering damper. That's it for four hours work. :-(

  17. Attempted to remove fan nut in-situ for dynamo change. Not budging, even with full 16 stone on the end of a 1m long breaker bar - I suspect some rattle gun action in its past.

Removed a million bolts, so manifold and oil tower are loose, dynamo cover undone and fan cowling free.

Its like one of those Christmas cracker puzzles - the manifold won't come out as it catches on the oil tower, the dynamo won't come out as it catches on the manifold and the oil tower won't come out as it catches on the dynamo. The fan cowling won't lift any higher, for reasons I don't understand (all released, just won't go up any further). Tried a million minor variations on positioning everything, just when you think its coming it jams up.

    So engine out time......

To be fair it is why they were designed to be just 4 bolts :p

  19. I know its just 4 bolts :D - out is easy, its getting it back in that I always found a pig (although only done beetles and T25 with WBX before). Somehow you have to get it back on the jack and then get it at the right angle to go back on the input shaft.

I have to do it on the street as well, so even more fun as I get a succession of 'helpful' comments from neighbors....
