    Rusty lee bed fitted yesterday!

  2. excellent stuff. well done you. what colour you going for? hard work definitely paid off.

  3. Thanks buddy, it has certainly been a journey! Ivory top half and interior with peppermint green bottom half! ImageUploadedByTapatalk1365870564.810864.jpg

  4. Well have been doing a lot of thinking and buying of bits since the shell has gone off for respray! :)

Have decided to put a whale heater under the van to save a bit of space and keep us warm and toasty on the fresh summer evenings! ;)
Unfortunately due to the van being lowered I am unable to put a horizontal propane bottle under the van as the smallest available propane bottle is 200mm dia, even if I cut the top hats out I am unable to maintain 200mm clearance between the underside of the bottle and the road! :( I therefore scratched my head and came up with the idea of sitting it between the seats! ;)

A space I won't use anyway as both seats spin around so will box it in and hey presto not visible, not in the way and then a drinks and phone holder on top!
Bought a complete package from http://www.gasure.co.uk/ they where extremely helpful and helped me to make sure that my design was safe and legal! Quarter turn valves in line after regulator and before each appliance to comply with EU regs. Regulator outside the van not directly attached to the tank, overflow straight outside in the event if a breakdown of the tank the propane will jettison straight outside!! Highly recommend them as a company if you are thinking of doing anything to do with gas!

Have then turned my attention to the engine and much to my delight have discovered it is in quite good nick! Had a bit if a scare when I thought my crankshaft end float was in excess of a cm!! :( thankfully Matty put me right and gently reminded me that with flywheel and pulley off the end float will be about a cm! :) phew thanks Matty! ;)
So finally worked out how to get tinware off and started to strip :)

Have decided to do away with heat exchangers and replace them with stainless stell J tubes, and have managed to pick up a nice second hand stainless exhaust system ;)

Borrowed an engine stand from a mate which saves the old back a bit!

Then started to take the heads off :)
Can only upload 10 piccies so will start another post :)

  5. So removed both heads and very happy as no sign of any blowing past the gaskets and all 4 bores look nice no Ridging just a bit of carbon :)

The engine was running fine before I stripped so have decided not to go further and take pots off or split crankcase so made up some retaining bars just to allow me to turn the engine over without disturbing the pots ;)

Then carefully started to clean up the tops if the pistons and the cylinders :)
    ImageUploadedByTapatalk1367134724.091814.jpg
    ImageUploadedByTapatalk1367134741.546429.jpg
Cleaned the heads of 3 & 4 cylinders up!
    ImageUploadedByTapatalk1367134787.098671.jpg
Then took valves out and cleaned up :)
    ImageUploadedByTapatalk1367134820.746434.jpg
All the seats look great on the head and the valves so cleaned the valves up and lapped them back in! Valve guides are all good with no sign of wear so one head down :)
Will do the other head today!
Not sure how old the engine is cos VW Audi made but in Brasil so not original! PO confidently informed me that engine had been bored out to 1641cc but measured dia of bores and is the original 85 mm so standard 1.6! :) quite glad really as I feel engine is much stronger as a consequence I having full thickness sidewalls!
Anyway enough talking and some more action me thinks! TTFN ;)

  6. So dropped a washer into the crankcase:( which meant a fairly major strip down in the end as I couldent fish the little tinker out! :(
    [IMG]
On the upside also found another washer that was resident so all worth it in the end!
Will start to put back together coming weekend! Getting the cylinders rehoned cos I can and thankfully bearings for crank and cam appear ok as do journals! :)

I can't see any of your pictures for some reason.
When I click the link I get "The Late Bay error - you do not have permission blah blah blah....."
Edit. I can see some, others are just links that don't work.

  8. Will try and resend
    Thanks :)

  9. This is all that is inside!

    Well happy;)
I am going to fit the power management system between the seats, next to my gas tank! And also send a T piece from the heater down through the floor in the same area to patch into a tube that runs to the front to demist the windscreen! ;)
Van is starting to be got ready for undercoat as well:)

  10. hey buddy, great work going on here! could you please send me some pictures of the whale heater? i clicked on your image attachments but it comes up with error all the time, also how much was it please?

    thanks :)

  11. Gas tank 20 lt horizontal LPG with external filler situated on front jacking point!
Gonna be fitted between seats as I don't like how much you can see it when attached to the underside! Also don't need the walkway between seats as have removed bulkhead and both seats swivel;)

I will box all this area in with all pipes going straight out through the floor to reg fitted on chassis then feeds to heater externally and one feed through the floor up to the hob. Overflow goes straight out of van as well so in case of malfunction tank will discharge onto the road! Bracket that comes with it is ace as it provides enough clearance to allow the tank to be set at 105 degrees to ensure gas not liquid pickup:)

  15. Hi dude
How bad in condition are those heat exchangers you removed?

  16. Not to bad at all I don't think! There are some small holes but easily patchable IMHO

  17. Are they the ones with just a few fat fins inside?

  18. No sorry dude you already asked me about them and I sent photos a couple of weeks ago:)

  20. Can I ask what the difference between a propex and a whale heater is? Is one better than the other?
