Wrong grade of spaghetti in the crankcase I reckon. :(

  2. Gutted for you ...
Hopefully not 'the end' as I know how much you enjoy the van and I for one enjoy your travels - just using it as it should be used .

Dunno what the answer is but a Scooby must be very tempting after all the bad luck you've had .
Interestingly, never heard anything but praise and if I had to I probably would ...

  3. Money pits aren’t they.

I feel your pain it is one thing after another but I also own a 3 year old Audi that needed a new modular unit this week, luckily just still in warranty, so these old buses don’t do too bad for 40+ years and countless owners botching things like me.

At least I can have a shot at fixing them myself without having to pass it onto someone with a laptop and the right diagnostic programme. Or at least that’s what I keep telling myself.

  5. I had 5 people and a dog in the van for a sneak into the campsite shower run in the lakes this weekend...

the memories alone make keeping the van worth it.. i just dont think i can do a summer without it whilst doing a conversion [IMG]

Tempting though a conversion is, it’s not really what you want to be doing in peak camping season.. I think I would be getting a like for like recon, go camping and try and forget about the expense.

You do have some legendary excursions in your van, so it will be money well spent. :)

    Yep, what @Dubs said
…. You use the van loads, obviously have great fun in it, and getting it back on the road asap seems like it would make you most happy.

  9. I feel sorry for you Sam. No matter how bad it looks, everything is fixable.
Whereabouts are you? I'm sure there are several forum members who'd be happy to try to help, myself included.

I believe when @mikedjames popped his last engine, he bought a brand new 1641, case 'n' all. JK or VWH, I can't remember which. I'm pretty sure he's happy with it, and it saved him being off the road for long.

  11. Or was it the one before that ;)?

Talk to @pkrboo on the Qt for an honest appraisal of what's open to you regarding conversions and those who offer bits.
He won't bite and knows his scooby bits...

You use it a lot, you need a decent engine, it's hard work for a 1600, especially all those hills you always seem to driving about on. I expect you've had to thrash it a lot.

  16. This is true. 1600s fine for pootling around town as a delivery van, but you have been giving it a bit of a beating on your travels.

Hope you get sorted, Sam

  17. does anyone on here do scooby conversions or work for those who do?!

Yes, a JK Preservation Parts 1641, it was basically on order from JK before I had even got home completely. I discussed recon engines/ DIY build options with my wife and she said just go for a new one.
So I think it took about three days to arrive, and I think end to end it was about 2 weeks from bang to back on the road. And as that new (apart from crankshaft and conrods) engine runs cooler and doesnt leak oil and has good oil pressure, I am still happy. The only slight hassle was needing tin snips on the tinware where the fillets in the aluminium case have a larger radius than the older AS21 case I had before.

Mine dropped a valve which jammed the piston and bent the con rod which then poked one corner through the top of the engine - at first it seemed like only a small piece, almost in the domain of bolting a patch on the outside. It was depressing standing in the sleet/snow waiting for pickup. But I was already planning how to rebuild it during my waiting time.

I just checked my Photoshop catalog of pictures.
7/9/2018 - blew up 0730. By 1700 I had the engine stripped down, amazing it ran with that much shrapnel blowing around inside. .
10/9/2018 New engine arrived. At the time about £2700 and I got £150 for the wreckage ..
    17/9/2018 New engine installed.
    19/9/2018 Visited friends using bus
21/9/2018 At Techenders, finished 500 miles run-in period.
Replaced one hose (unfiltered oil hose) going to filter on full flow system, re-fitted CB Maxi 3 pump after cleaning it, went home with full flow filtration.
If the case had held up, the full flow filter would have meant zero time cleaning fragments out of the pressurised oil system, although the case was pretty full of bits. So were cylinder heads on the opposite side.

If you go Scooby, expect higher costs plus delays in finding now ageing suitable donor vehicles.

    As I said above...
Edit...be aware it's not ' just' a simple shoe in.
It will probably involve re-gearing as well depending on the age and type of gearbox you've currently got.
@pkrboo has reworked and fitted a subarugears trans to work with his conversion and has done work for other members.
A 6 rib can be strengthened to work with the increased power of the scooby engine, as can earlier boxes, but it's a journey you'll need to embark on with eyes wide open.
Talk to the pros and those who've walked the walk and don't rush into what can be a costly exercise unless you're committed:thumbsup:
