  3. Best of luck, Sam, sorry to hear your tale. A nice 1776 with an external oil cooler might be a good way forward?

  6. A Type 4 conversion is a bit more work than replacing your dead Type 1 with a decent 1776.

Type 4 parts are more expensive, tho' it's fundamentally a better design of engine, better cooled etc.

  8. Or, spend a bit more and get a VW Heritage preservation engine, there's also an engine builder in Scotland that has a good reputation, PM me if you decide to go that route. Either way, if you decide on like-for-like swap but bigger get an external oil cooler fitted.

  9. Know the pain, I use to have awful luck with my engine back when I got my Moony, got it sorted eventually, I think scooby would be perfect solution.

We went with a scooby conversion in our westy, it’s a 2.0 (from an auto car which had a documented service history) mated to a 6-rib box.

The drive has been transformed to another level, not speed wise as I don’t drive it fast but in perspective, around Derbyshire and Yorkshire the hills come and go with ease now whereas before it was a struggle at times.

Matt (Pkrboo) did our conversion so as others have said, drop him a chat to see what’s involved etc & to give you something to think about. It may not be for you, but the background info will be in your mind.

Has anyone said T5/6 yet? :D
Joking aside, if you love your Bay, Scooby seems to be the way to go. And Matt seems to be the chap to talk to

  12. Depends what you are happy with.
With a Scooby conversion you always have a Frankenstein. Road side assist will always be a problem.
    For me it’s about induction.
Yes - I know some bays had FI
Yes - my T3 has FI

Me - I would go Type 4 with Webers

Simple and true to the cause.

But what ever floats your boat

  13. I have a Type 4 with F.I in my T2 landy , took me round Spain and Portugal trouble free, great combo.

It is feasible, reasonably straightforward and an 1800 Type 4 is an OK engine - it's a type-4 so more robust with better cooling.
I would just say that if you are going to switch to type-4, a 2L would be better, longer throw crank, torquier engine, more cc's.
The 1800 would be happier with your 1600 gearbox than a 2L though.

  15. yes, id settle for a type 4 2.0l with a 6 rib box.

finding one is my issue .

right now i have no idea what direction to head in.

a 1776 or 1914 with external filtration and cooler too maybe? for the miles i end up doing.

i can't sell the bus, I've too much attachment to it.

scooby is definitely super tempting right now.. i just wanna do my climbing and hiking in the van, each weekend without the struggles.

    Dilemma time.

Write a pro and con list for each option you have and list any costs etc which you will need to outlay.

Look at any parts you have which will be surplus and list potential selling prices.

I did the above and it helped me choose the scooby path.

It worked well though in listing everything in black & white.

Subaru would suit you but the conversion takes time.
1776 are a nice cheap type-1 upgrade, but you still have the type-1 cooling which is the limiting thing in a bus, and you'd have more power to overheat it with. I built a powerful 2L type-1 for a tin-top I had - it was really great fun accelerating, but still wouldn't cruise over 60mph without getting too hot.
A stroker type-4 is the ultimate air-cooled bus engine, but starting from scratch like you are, a Subaru conversion will be cheaper.

  18. When my 1600 went bang, I decided to sell it and still got a good price for the van. You want to keep your van so keep it. I would buy a cheapish recon 1600 and accept you won't get many years out of it. Its a simpler approach, you get your van back soon and the spend won't be excessive. Change the oil often and maintain it and you may get a few years out of it.

The folks who bought my van did just that, put in a cheap recon and sold it on for a tidy profit, I am happy my old van was bought by an old retired gent like me to enjoy once again.

Is the engine downstairs in the workshop any good? Would it be for sale?
