You can spend as much as you like, but it's not compulsory. Take one 1600, machine case and heads, new B&Ps - job done - this is why they're so popular! No need to replace the single carb even. No need to replace the exhaust - people DO replace those but they didn't in the olden days, they just did the B&Ps and carried on with a bit more oomph.
As @MorkC68 said you need to write down the pros and cons for each option, that will help you narrow it down. Id gather your information before doing writing the pros and cons E.G. Speak to @pkrboo about likely costs and times to do subaru engine and what the situation would be with gearboxes. Look at costs of type one engines e.g speak to @mikedjames about his 1641 preservation parts engine. An Off the shelf engine will save you time, but not everyone has good experiences with them Standard gear box was fine for me on a 1776cc engine, but when i went 2110cc type one engine I needed a gearbox with 6 rib equivalent ratios (extra cost & time for you). There are companies out there selling Type 4 engines, you'll have to factor in new tin wear, seals & ancillaries etc etc Don't expect to decide overnight & don't rush into a decision. You need to get this decision right for your longer term camper enjoyment Good luck
Problem is the timing really, such a shame. The better the long term solution, the longer it'll be off the road. Maybe risk a temporary cheapo 1600 replacement, nurse it through the summer, make plans and do your long term jobby over the winter*. You can always sell on the 1600 if it survives and TBH they don't normally throw rods through the case!
i cant find anything worth chucking in until winter, i have thought about doing that, getting the legwork done on a subaru conversion whilst i have light nights and warm conditions, run the wiring and radiators etc then do a migration later in the year. the market for cases and 1600s is literally none existing today Sent from my ELE-L09 using Tapatalk
Or sell it and buy mine, you'd like mine, it has all you'd ever want, fridge, solar, wind out awning, eber, proper R&R bed, hook up, a whacking great 2.4L type-4 engine and 6-rib box, Devon concertina poptop, reversible passenger seat just had the bottom half sorted and painted. Took me 20 years to organise my ultimate camper but now ill health forces sale.
& @MR SAM HODSON don't you have a spare 1600 case kicking about? Build the best you can from what you have? Or buy the cheapest 1600 you can find with a years guarantee (@Dubs mentioned a company recently who he has had a lot of engine from, for his customers) Buy an extra breakdown recovery policy so you'll always be able to complete your camping missions. If you breakdown on the way there, use policy 1 to get to a campsite. Then relax and enjoy your holiday, knowing policy 2 can be used to get you back home safely! Get saving whilst enjoying the holidays
I'd think twice about DIY Subaru, there is a lot to learn. Last time I spoke to Pkrboo it was cheaper to pay him inc a 2.5L Subaru engine than DIYing new big valve type-4 heads, new B&Ps and a cam for my 2.4L type-4 AND I'd still have my turnkey engine to sell! I'd actually have made a good profit of several £thousands. Should have done it TBH,
Shardlow t4's have two 1600's on ebay. Listed for spare's or repairs. got to be close to @theBusmonkey. might be worth a PM and see if he knows them or anything about the engines. This or similar would get you up and together ASAP then think about a subaru conversion, it takes time and cash, and finding donor cars is somewhat tricky at the moment. If you are thinking you want to go 2ltr type 4, I'd go Subaru, it's cheaper, better and more long lasting. Ask me how I know. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/334201809965?hash=item4dcffaec2d:g:9TUAAOSwkRNhftyM https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/334201814331?hash=item4dcffafd3b:g:GGIAAOSwIPFhft~F
It's a concern that they use the same cut and paste arse covering description for both of those - i.e. turns freely/slight amount of end float. I think I'd rather buy a long block that at least claimed to have been rebuilt and transfer my known good ancillaries over?
Yeah, I can see their unit from the boat! Good bunch of lads as well. I've bought gearboxes off them in the past. @MR SAM HODSON I will say that as they are breakers, anything they have will likely need work, and they are in it for the money..but then you would anyway The main man there is David... Happy to help in any way I can
when looking into the block, i can see the gungen pin, intact, but no piston. the end you can see is the crank end the money shot eyy Sent from my ELE-L09 using Tapatalk
