See if any valve seats are moving into the head.

  4. Aha! I see what you mean.

  5. Bearing replacement is par for the course. So whip the old bearings off, see what size they are them measure up the crank and see if there is any wear from that size. If not just replace like for like.

One other thing, you did mark which lifter came from where didn't you? If you're reusing the same cam and lifters they must go back where they came from due to the wear pattern. If you don't do this you will dramatically increase the cam wear and it will fail shortly afterwards.

AP is an 1800 bus engine. Unless you've got the facilities yourself I'd take the whole lot now to a local engine shop and get it all hot washed.

  6. This engine has already been rebuilt so its unlikely the bearings are standard size
    :)

  7. Lifters and push rods marked.
Was thinking that as I'd got this far was there any gain in changing the cam?
I only have a parts washer, nearest engine place is going to be a fair distance I'd guess.

  8. Will your case fit in the parts washer? Anything is better than reusing a dirty case.

Unless you're on a really tight budget i'd say replace the cam and lifters. They're not too expensive and as you're upping the power its worth while. Don't bin the old ones though unless they're well worn.
    :)

  9. Good work, looks like its going well, must say its one of the smartest garages ive been in, although a Dyson is a bit OCD

  10. Indeed everyone knows henrys are the hoover of choice for garage floors;)

  11. What would you recommend? Cam wise?
Everything inside looks to be good condition. :)
I have a steam washer at work for the cases. I'll put the other parts through my parts washer.

  12. Paul weeding is the man to ask about cams. That's who I always ask

I can take engines apart, work out why they stopped working, put engines together and make them work well again but I don't have a clue how it all works

  13. An 86a would be ok. got a 86b in mine,but that's a 2056

  14. Sure you don't wanne do a 2056 out of it, swap the 94mm p/b for a new 96mm ones ?

  15. I have my black tinware stripped and powdercoated satin black, the fan housing and alternator tin is stripped and powdercoated too. I normally pay around £40 for the fan housing as I usually go for a bit more outrageous colour
    :D

  16. Aren't the cranks different though?
    :)

  17. I think to go bigger I'll need to machine the cases out too.
1910cc is enough, it's going to be a daily work horse don't forget.

  18. They hold the bolts in the case, and I've also seen them called anti-vibration pieces

You're wanting to measure the bearing journals on the crank, big ends and mains, and the bearing saddles in the case!! :)

  19. What carbs are you using on it?

The web 86a is a nice upgrade over the stock cam
