According to @cunny44 they will refund me and send out a new log book I’ve read the same on here before from people So I’ll wait and see
I've never heard of them automatically sending a new log book out when it becomes 40 years old, I had to apply at a post office(well actually it took 3 POs before I found one that knew what I was on about) and send the log book off. Unless the system has changed since 2016 historic status is something that has to be applied for
Know what you mean, I got different answers from different Post Offices! What does the DVLA website say?
First post office I tried (a big one) drew a blank, second one said "gis it here" filled in the necessary and sent it off for me. My experience with a couple of vans that became tax free while I owned them is DVLA will keep happily taking your money until you change the log book. I don't recall getting any money back other than unused complete months, no back dated refund.
Until today, I’ve never heard anyone saying it is done automatically. I’m pretty sure it isn’t. Quickest way is to change your log book and sent it back. Waiting for them will just use up the 6 months you’ve just paid for. https://www.fbhvc.co.uk/mot-exemption-information
@cunny44 can you confirm yours was done automatically and you received a refund and a new log book showing historic tax classification?
That’s not correct what they are saying about you still having to get an mot regardless of the vehicles age if you haven’t registered it as historic It automatically knew the vehicle was over 40 years old and didn’t require an mot I just had to tick a box to say it hasn’t been substantially modified
Mine wasn’t ’automatic’. I just filled in a separate bit of paper that was at the post office and sent them both off together (V5). Did the same with my CX500, and I’ll be doing the same with my BMW k75c in 2026. Who wants to pay road tax anymore. Not with the state they are in. Sell everything one day and by a Landy to cope with the potholes…
the system that knows its age may well know , but the system that gives you free road tax needs telling
There does seem to be a disconnect. Some/most Post Offices won't have a clue what you're talking about if you try to do it there. V5 to DVLA. Wait a bit. Historic V5 comes back. Done. You're also exempt from ULEZ, so you can cruise round London in your van, showing your bare arse as you drive past Sadiq's house
It did - I was surprised as I had paid the tax and thought I had another to wait - but this 10 years ago. Not sure about getting tax with no insurance though - that shouldn't happen.
