Historic tax

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by paradox, Feb 13, 2024.

  1. I was worried that with a possible government change coming up that there’s a possibility of the historic vehicle free tax being scrapped especially for the ones that aren’t registered as historic yet.

So I have just taxed the paravan
The strange thing is it let me tax it without insurance

Anyway I’ve had to pay for six months tax
It gave me the tick box option for not requiring a mot as it’s over 40 years but nothing to select free tax.

Those of you that have already been through this did you get a refund afterwards also did you get a new log book showing the taxation class as historic?

  2. Yes log book shows Historical to get free tax, any you pay is refunded.

Historic VW Club sorted the paperwork to send to DVLA for the Historic classification.

  3. My log book shows private light goods at the moment
This is the first time it will be taxed after it’s turned over 40 years old
I’m wondering if they automatically send out a new log book?

  4. You better to get the paperwork to prove then send

Rod from the club was very helpful

  5. no need for that as dvla already know on their system the vehicle is over 40 years old as they give me the tick box option of mot exemption

  6. Then you should not have to pay any tax?

  8. There was no option for that only for mot exemption
The last time it was taxed was about 2011 and it wasn’t over 40 years old then

Is your van 41 years old ?
You have to apply for exemption , if your log book shows over 40 years old you don’t need any dating certificate

Exemption isn’t automatic. You need to fill out the log book and send it back with a covering letter / proof of age if it’s not showing as old enough.

  12. The DVLA did mine automatically - My bus is a 73 so that was back in 2014 .
If your bus was manufactured in 1983 it will become tax free after April this year.

I just took my log book in and the person behind the desk sorted it. It was sent away and came back through the post with historic status. You then have to tax it so to speak when you get the reminder/renewal form through, but it doesn’t cost anything. Just shows it’s not sorn I guess.

  14.
    are you on the IOW....:D

  15. The log book states date of manufacture as 1978
The system knows it’s over 40 years old because it gave me the tick box for mot exemption.

  16. OK - so it will have been tax free from 2019 - or at least 2020. Have you not tried to tax it since - if you have it will automatically gone over to tax-free and you should have been refunded any tax paid after that date.

  17. Last time it was taxed was 2011 the van wasn’t tax free at that point
I’ve taxed it today for the first time since then
The system is aware that it’s over 40 years old as it’s shown me the tick box for being mot exempt and not substantially modified
But when I taxed it I had to pay instead of it being nil.

I remember reading on here some me time ago that when your taxing it for the first time it’s exempt
That you have to pay for the tax but they then refund it you and send out a new logbook

I’m just trying to clarify that that’s what happens

  18. It appears from that link that it has to be done at the post office but last time I asked at the post office they said it has to be already taxed before they can change the taxation class
That would have cost me to do and they didn’t know if I’d get that cost refunded

  19. Yeah - that happened with mine in 2014

  20. Thanks
I’ll wait a week or two then and see if I get the refund and a new log book
If not then I’ll have to get on the phone to those delightful bods at DVLA.

Strange how you can tax a vehicle nowadays without the vehicle being insured.
