Heating and tin parts identification please.

  1. Hello mate.

The parts you have came straight off a stock Type 4 2.0 CJ engine and are all original and standard they are not a mish-mash they are as VW intended and all from the same lump. I ran this engine for six months and all the heating worked perfectly you have everything off the engine apart from heat exchangers and tin.

I saw you wondered why two pieces had been blocked off they are from the exchangers to the engine bay I blocked them off because I removed the snail fan when I was changing the carbs and just blocked them off so I didnt vent hot air in to the cold zone.

hi ned, yes your bits are fine i wasn't knocking them.....the exchangers i had off dubious won't connect to your bits is what i meant......therefore the exchangers are probably not right for your bits.

  4. Ricky, to answer your question about dropping the engine......Can't really answer that one. sorry. It's not particularly difficult. I've taken mine out 3 times and by the final time it only took 2 hours to remove and 3 to get it back and fully running.

I can only talk from experience that when I checked the tin wear properly I was missing the thermostat (didn't even know they had one) and the flaps that sit inside the fan shroud and direct the air).

Feel so much happier now I know that the cooling is exactly how VW intended it to be, and testament to that is the 2 hour stop start traffic jam on the M25 in July where I passed 4 water cooled cars which had over heated, by the old air cooled VW just kept ticking along just fine.

cheers mate, i have learnt a lot this last few days
    european spec
    us spec
    california only spec

my van - bits of all and a lot of missing bits.

chances of finding the bits i need - slim

chances i'll have to "adapt" - high.

zed, i know you said the repair could be done in situ, i'm just wondering would it be wise to drop it and renew all petrol pipes and anything else while i have it inside and off the road what do you think?

  8. If your planning on keeping the bus for a number of years and you take the family out in her, and you have the time and money, then I'd drop the engine, replace the fuel lines, re-paint the tine wear. replace the push rod tube seals etc. Then come spring, you'll have a bus that you know has good fuel hoses and good cooling. Smiles all round ;D

martin, yes exactly what i'm thinking, i am keeping it a long time, and i just think that even though i don't "need" to remove the engine to repair and replace this tin, it seems i could get it all done in one go while it's inside and off the road.

  10. I don't think peace of mind can be under estimated. You will be able to sleep at night safe in the knowledge that every thing is as it should be

A minute ago you were cursing one job leading to another so I was just going with the flow looking for short-cuts for you. Everyone has a different attitude to what's important. Now you've perhaps realised that one thing actually leads to 10 others, yep, drop the engine (though the tin and exhaust is easier when it's in the van), and do everything - when it's done it's done - just look at Birdy's. ;)

i don't actually know what they look like......zed will know or joker, they were helping me, zed said he may have the fin cover bits on an old engine, i am sort of waiting until after the xmas hols is done before i start to push the search.

  15. the one on the bottom left of the picture is the one you need. But you need 2 - they are a mirror image of each other.

You can bet your bottom dollar that if they've removed the thermostat and the bottom tins etc in an effort to aid cooling then they were a complete plank, and I bet they removed the upper tins too - the one that feeds the air down to the oil cooler.

I'd whip the engine out if you're not using the van and get it sorted. Having working heat is the least preferable to having a working engine...
    :)

Ref the flaps mate - Just span through all your heating threads and the Bollynippers one and no pic. Take a pic of the middle top of the fan housing where it meets the tinware and post it up. :)

This is what you're looking for (arrowed). If you haven't got this as well as the tins missing, no wonder it was getting hot.
