Oh dear. No bar. No bar = no flaps = much reduced oil cooling. The left flap does 2 jobs, one of which is when it's warmed up it channels some of the air that is heading across the top of the oil cooler to the cylinders, down through the oil cooler.

You've clearly inherited all these mods from a person of questionable sanity who appears to have been trying to get it to run hotter for some reason.:)

That's right - kick him in the balls while he's on the floor.

  5. The LED's are supposed to be hidden.

Can't really kick a bloke in the balls when he drives a van that looks like its been dipped in chimp poo - if there is anything to say i'd guess its already been said

Seriously though Rick, i'll help when I can, I also have a bin full of all the bits you're missing, including the all important flaps.
    :)

  6. flaps is a great word, don't you think?

videos for mr zed and mr joker to confirm the top end of the engine is missing thermostat bits and to see if they notice any more "novelty modifications" by uncle sam and his burger loving chums.

  11. Looks like what had been done to mine. the oil cooler flap is probably still inside the tinware but the bar and flap for the other side has been removed alongh with the thermostat.

If they have left the flap in over the top of the oil cooler it will be on the open position so the cooler will be getting cooled as it should.

tbh it all looks ok from the video's probs just the stat and the right side flap missing and the bar.

i will check if i have any pics from when i sorted mine.

  12. Exactly the same as I found mine when I got her. Both flaps and the connecting bar missing, Thermostat, bracket and pulley wheel missing. Managed to get all the missing parts from RCC, and a new thermostat from VW heritage. You need the original bellows type Thermostat. Unfortunately you can't get a type 4 one, only the Bellows for the Type1. It does operate at very slightly different temperatures and you do need to modify the cable to fit, but it's a easy.

if its not on but in the open position so getting cool air to the oil cooler i aint overly bothered if its on there, but as i say in the vid, i don't even know where to look to see if the flaps are on or open? whats it under?

  14. Looking into the engine bay, Left hand side, of the cooling fan assembly, just where your coil is fitted. You see where the top piece of tin is fitted. Well under that is the cooling flap. My bet is that if the bar is missing then the flap is also missing. The flap directs cooling air over the top of the cylinders, and diverts flow to the top of the oil cooler.
When cold the cooling air by passes the oil cooler, and as the oil warms up the cooling flap progressively closes forcing more air through the oil cooler. There is a little spring fitted to the bar that goes across the engine and attaches both cooling flaps (missing on your engine) which forces the flaps into the maximum cooling (too the oil cooler) if the thermostat cable fails (fail safe)

  15. couldn't find any of my own pics but here are a few links with pics and write ups. believe me you aint alone, A lot of USA buses have this "mod" done to them because the PO thinks that running without a stat and having the flaps permanently open means the bus will run cooler. it just means it takes longer to get to its operating temp.

mine was the same and loads there are loads of threads on the Samba about your exact problem. the underneath tin is missing because it wont have had anywhere to screw onto because the HX's were replaced with J tubes.

  16. just undo a couple of the top bits of tin and lift it up, you should be able to lift enough to get a look as to whether it is there or not.

the thing is if it is there then it should be in the open position anyway.

  17. My money is on it all missing. The problem with that, is that although you are always at max cooling, the air is not being forced through the oil cooler. The flap directs the air through the cooler when on max cooling.

Got to hand it to the boffins at VW , They knew what they were doing, and although people think that air cooled engines are agricultural a lot of thought went into the design of them

cheers chaps, im on a phone connection at mo so cant k+ but i will later. i'll have a look under the tin over the next few days, i still can't picture where this bar connects and pivots though, there doesnt look like any holes or bracketry etc

  19. If you look closely at the fan casing, you will see 2 little bits that stick out with a half moon cut into them. The rod sits in these. Poor explanation, so I've added a picture.
This was taken before I took the engine out to re-build.
