  1. awesome write up Joker.

Ricky; i know you are skint but thermostats and flaps and brackets etc come up on the Samba classifieds from time to time, i got mine from there for about $100 all in but i was living in the states at the time and so postage wasnt alot. well worth keeping an eye out on there though.

In [glow=red,2,300]FACT[/glow] look at this: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1184394 I have bought from him before and he is very reliable and accurate with his parts and descriptions.

anyhooooo, i read jokers comprehensive listing last night, the section where it says about no bottom tin but top tin fitted causing uneven cooling....causing warping and head damage???? should i worry? or are we assuming that it's run hot this long so is probably ok? the cht gauge always sits around 400 degrees i remember holmsen saying that was top end temp and anymore was iffy....hope i've been lucky!
oh and yes mr zed it does seem complicated, but once i've seen it working with my eyes i can usually work it out, if that makes sense? reading books and relating it to how to do it is a struggle for me, if i watch someone once i'm usually ok with it, i'm not bad at mechanics in general, i was often the one offering advice and stuff on the landy forum i was on, 21 years i had one and i'd learnt a lot, but relating that to how air cooling works is wierd. do you know i've never set points or timing on a petrol car for example? never needed to, i've had diesels for ever bar the odd thing like my jag and i had a man do that  i'm really greatful that everybody is being kind though after my Marmite year last year etc i'm hoping this year is gonna be better.

  8. "the cht gauge always sits around 400 degreeds", this aint good, way to high. Reason could be it's running lean.

Just to say the tin for around the pistons arrived today thanks Zed, gonna go and get some degreaser and paint for them later.

  10. I've been researching this topic for quite some time now as I'm converting my US import '76 from the '75-'78 exhaust/heat exchangers system that you showed on the original post to the much simpler 72-74 type. The US 72-74 style exchangers are the same as the UK CJ engine code type. This system only has three elements 1.) the heat exchangers (x2) 2.) the Exhaust Silencer.

The system you and I currently have has many many separate parts, exhaust header, 'U' bends, heat exchangers and the silencer as seen on the parts diagram posted earlier. The tinware you need has to be from a US '75-'78 Bus as the exhaust header runs towards the front of the bus through the tinware and then turns 180 degrees via the 'U" bend in to the heat exchangers. The lower tinware has to have a groove in it to take the exhaust header and a space / hole for the exhaust header to run through.

I am very close to source all the parts I need for the conversion the only piece I need is the lower left tinware that Joker posted below, indeed Rocking Horse Poo! BUT it is not what you need as this is for US '72-'74 or UK CJ code heat exchangers.

ok matey cool, i'm in no rush, the exchangers i have are in need of repair (if you've seen my vids it shows) but i've sourced another set, the ones i have are (i'm told) specific to 78 california vans that's why the outputs are oval and the fitment to the exuaust is triangular, the "new" set are the same but are supplied with one of the oval to round risers to go to the pods, i should be able to source or modify the other, if i don't in time i'll put the j-tubes back on until i get the bits i need, p.m me for my number or whatever when you're ready to do a deal and we will meet up. Rick.

  12. Just seen you vid, and yes that right exchanger is pasted it's sell by date! i do have the spare heater pipe you talk about in a box that is oval and goes to the aux fan.
