I used an assortment of wire brushes on an air line. It's more time consuming than people give credit for all this engine stuff.

Another all-dayer at the garage and yet it doesn't look like a lot was done. That said tomorrow the engine will be finished :)

    Getting there.

Mark doesn't like the grey Didn't like it on the Wiseman wagon. So if he doesn't like my grey then l am sure he will like this instead :)

Dreaded doing this job and then discovered the joys of sweeping. It was mighty dusty.

Unfortunately l couldn't get the fan separated from the pulley so it was a masking job instead and a lot of fiddle cleaning.

  11. i guess mine doesn't make a mess as its a new engine so hasn't worn to the point where the case pressure is too high yet. If I 'd had it fit to my old engine it wouldn't have worked. If you're leaving that fan case polished you'll want to seal the 2 halves back together again with something, engine case sealant or something, you'll lose an awful lot of your precious cooling air otherwise
    :)

I've never split one for the same reason. Are they sealed from new? Or just a great fit?

Cheers for the heads up. A dap of liquid gasket was applied to the various surfaces prior to fitting.

There is no gasket fitted originally Zed. The 2 halves just come together and its pot luck l think from the factory

It's done. Well almost :( l wasn't able to fit the alternator because l need to do something with the wires because of a small incident the bus had prior to me buying and I've only just seen when removing it.

So add another hour to the total to include the fitting of the above and the clean up of the fan guard which needs renewing because it's slightly broken and it has taken me 29 hours

    Ready to go :)

Clean carb after a lot of elbow grease and autosol.

    Don't need this anymore.

Found this where the gas tank lived. It's a VAG number for a new gas tank for fuel injected buses. Going to make it into a keyring.

A little trick l got told by VW Heritage. For those missing gaskets, make them out of fuel pipe.

Next week l will be starting to make this pretty and shine like new again.

And some areas that will need a dose of waxoyl prior to the gas tank going back in.

I have a few as well - just don't have time to mess about splitting them for no reason.:) I'd have left it in one piece, swilled the oil out with petrol and cleaned the outside... You have to keep your eye on the bigger picture. 29 hours? + paint etc etc £1,000+? Pretty sure I could buy quite a good engine for that. :)

    Looking good Birdy. 8)
