It might explain a lot if you imagined that that valve has a correct sized head but in all other respects is a valve off a totally different vehicle with a different length and stem diameter. All it may need is to carefully clean the carbon out of the guide without removing the soft metal of the guide, and then to fit a VW valve. Measure the stem diameter. It's probably thinner than the other exhaust valve in the same head. That could explain the leak of exhaust into the cylinder head.
On more careful examination while taking the valves out to measure, one of the other guides can be moved up and down with little resistance…. so think I’ll be going down the route suggested by @Zed .
Engine guy seemed positive that he could sort …. do all “professionals “ do that sharp intake of breath through the teeth thing? …..anyway, thanks to the help of @3901mick , I’ll soon have a replacement valve and spring to give to the machinist and he’s going to sort it for me …. quoted £200 … we shall see, but they’ve always been fair with me in the past.
Nice man at fit new guides and re- grind the valves and give it a good clean. He was concerned about the existing guides having a fatter top, but I said, hopefully accurately, that you can only get plain ones that are peened over…so he was going to source/ make himself.
Got to get that one off…. Couple of the studs have come out instead of the nut, so had left for the moment. May try another engine machining company as it does seem expensive for basically fitting 4 new guides .
No idea. Been a few years since I touched one now. (Touch wood) there is always the https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/27533532...7MIkUWHTlS&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY option
If it includes vat, supplying/ making stepped guides and cutting the seats it's very reasonable and half the price of a new head?
The head for a CJ engine is £344 + post. Was beginning to consider new, but didn’t want to waste salvageable parts. ( and money). Can we still buy stuff from Germany, without additional charges? Heritage, if they will give a 10% discount, works out at £350.
Not sure if the valves would be stepped, but it seemed reasonable…but then I considered that the new guides would cost no more than £50……but skilled work with specialist equipment costs. But as a Yorkshire man, I’m going to speak to another local firm to get a comparative opinion/quote.
When you mentioned he was going to machine his own, I assumed you meant stepped ones. He has to... Remove old guide Make/obtain new guide Fit guide including reaming the head for over-size guides (yours loose) Possibly ream the guides for the valve Cut the valve seat to be concentric with the new guide £40+vat per guide seems good for that to me.
…..agreed…..it’s easy to look at the parts and forget the work involved… equally, if you suddenly get hit with VAT…. new ones start to look good value… and they’re shiny!
I agree and you also get new valves and springs into the bargain which incidentally, having all that work done on the head I'd want new exhaust valves as a minimum. I'd like new heads with bigger valves but they're $2k a pair plus import duties so the Scot in me won't do it.
If we add in new valves, that’s another £50 …. so if it’s £200 +valves +VAT, we’re looking at almost new head money. Then , I may / will have miss- matched heads….. …… all new parts on both sides seems tempting now.
