It’s in the garage…. ordered a motorbike jack … just got to read up on the separation of the engine and gearbox ( it’s an auto).

I live on a boat cat, we don't have the luxury of a dining room. lol

In that case, I would think you would be better off selling the van, and getting something more reliable, and less work, tbh.

Pot calling etc.. hope you are tongue in cheek there..

I managed to build an engine on the driveway outdoors that ran first time and kept running for 27000 miles. Without the help of the man down the pub or a Porsche expert.

Yes. I have another van. And a car, and the wife’s car, and 3 motorcycles (more toys). The vw is a toy that ain’t eating any grass. I don’t know people’s circumstances on here. I’m just saying that if ‘I’ lived on a barge, with my 3 kids, etc, then I would have a more reliable vehicle, in case of emergencies. I really wouldn’t want to trust a 5o+ year old Vehicle.
I don’t make it my business to know other people’s business. Good luck, though.

We run our vans differently. You wait for failures then fix them. I try to maintain mine so there aren't failures. It's like washing up - you could live in a pile of dirty dishes and pans and wash what you need just before you use it, or you could keep everything clean and wash up after dinner. It's the same work in the end, I just like a clean kitchen and a maintained van. To be clear I'm not suggesting you live in a pile of dirty dishes! :)

Well. I do sometimes live under a pile of dirty washing up. I also like a clean kitchen, but we’ve only just finished building that, too…:D

To get the thread back on track…….
… I’ve dropped the oil, cleaned the garage so I can see what I’m doing/ laying on.
Going to recover my ramps from my son, I think that I’ve enough room to get them under without crushing pop top on garage roof.

Make sure you either leave the sump plug out or put it back in tightly.

How do I know to do this? Read me

Sump plug back in with new crush washer and tight.
Will be putting a piece of wood on top of the jack to allow any high bits to dig into it.

I would say its easier, don't forget the thread lock on the flex plate bolts when you put it back

I built the top ends of my type 4 engine, on a patio, in the garden, with a tarp attached to the top of fence posts, to stop me getting wet in the rain, before I could afford a shed, as we had no floors and ceilings in our first house, with no help or internet. Does that count for anything? The day after, we drove to Cornwall in it. 1996.

This made me think of that “ four Yorkshire men “ sketch….. but it’s amazing what we used to do “ back in the day”.

    I did 2 minis like that on my dads drive. A 1963 1000 and a 1974 clubman, with a 1340 race engine.

Back with the van, after enforced DIY duties.
Never removed an engine with an automatic transmission…. is this one of the 4 bolts that I need to remove to separate the drive plate from the torque converter?

Yes. If you see 'em through that hole those are they.

  20. And note that they are designed so you can't accidentally drop them into the inner workings. There are only three bolts btw.
