I installed new heads recently (along with barrels and pistons etc.). Only done around 800miles so far but can't fault the heads.

10% off as well so around £350.

I'd recommend that you get the measuring tool to make sure you measure the CC of the combustion chamber etc. Coolair rent them.

    Ended up being £350 each.
Will pm you regarding your kind offer of shims.
Did you seal them and if so what did you use?

Sorry...for some bizarre reason I thought they came in pairs (you'd think I'd know as I've just bought some myself).

I didn't do anything to them pre fitting. They fit directly to the barrels - no gasket required. I'd be interested to know what measurement you get for the combustion chamber in the head (I measured 52cc).

Will put figures on here when heads come.
I’d been watching YouTube videos and some use Curil sealant….but I meant at the barrel to case end.

I didn't use sealant anywhere to do with heads fitment, barrels, push rob tubes etc. Only place I did was on rocker covers.

  7. Sealant is needed between the case and barrels
It should not be needed on the rocker covers.

Bentley manual doesn't make any reference to sealant between barrel and case. States '...Cylinder sealing surfaces. These must be perfectly clean and true prior to cylinder installation...'.

On the rocker cover, I only use sealant to hold the gasket in place in the cover.

    So a drop of Curil?

Did you fit the thin paper gaskets between barrels and case? better than nothing if the case is in A1 order.
Unfortunately for you as you didn't know, what everyone does, and I mean everyone, is use the gaskets and use sealant. It will leak. It's just splash, not pressure, but give it time...

Curil is ok if things are in good order, but it's oil soluble so relies on a perfect fit.

    @Betty the Bay

I have these at home (I think) that I'll never use, if you need them:

    • 6 unused plastic case to case half vibration dampers
    • 5 used but look reusable bearing dowels
    • 4 square port heat exchanger to cylinder head gaskets all new
    • 4 base shims 100 x 109 x 0.7(?) all new
    • 4 cylinder head spacers 93 x 104 x 0.7mm all new

Remind me tonight after Ive fought off Ikea and I'll take a look, see what's in the garage.

Apparently the heads don’t use spacers ( according to Heritage website) … all I will need, in due course, is spacers between case and cylinders to adjust deck height/compression ratio.
Thanks very much for the offer.
    Enjoy your meatballs…..and no cutting!

Just wasn’t sure if ( when I get to that stage), if something is required between spacer and case/ spacer and barrel…didn’t want it all together and have issues.

Bentley does make some assumptions. Same on the Vanagon edition. They assume mechanical knowledge and were really aimed at the dealers who I guess trained the technicians in the basics. They don't lay it out truly step by step so it's usually best to use VWOA stuff in conjunction with Hayes, who use many of the same photographs incidentally but are a bit more home mech orientated

    No problem matey!

  17. I beg to differ, Sir. Curil's unaffected by oil, so fine for barrel to case sealing. Bin the paper gaskets.

    Which Curil would you recommend?
I can’t help thinking that if I build the engine up without and it leaks, I’d wonder if only……..

  19. Curil-T, if you can find it. Use a splodge everywhere, between case halves (only needs a smear), under the barrels and under every nut and bolt on the case
