Curil-T ordered…..I can do my own “leaking “ without the engine joining in.

  2. Good splosh under everything and a thin smear under every gasket, and they don't leak.

Well that’s the cylinder head dilemma resolved.[IMG]

I had those heads on Gusbus’ motor, really good quality and no issues with them at all. Still going more than strong now with the new owners.

    Or Permatex aviation engine sealant.

They look good, unlike some AA cylinders I've seen, look at how narrow the case to cylinder sealing face is around the stud on this AA cylinder. Are you using flat top or dished pistons with the Mahle cylinders?

Use a smear, and no more, of sealant both sides of the cylinder base spacer and on the washers on the head studs inside the rocker covers. I usually use Permatex Aviation or Curil-T but I never use sealant and a gasket. Sealant or gasket, never both. Cylinder stud scallop.JPG

Awaiting arrival of my Cool Air cylinder measuring kit, which should be arriving tomorrow.
I know that I have to measure the cylinder head capacity, but does the dished piston “capacity “ need to be measured and added to the cylinder head volume?
Only £5.50 to hire, but almost £13 postage!

    You need to measure both:thumbsup:

Well, as a Yorkshireman, at least I’m getting a bit more for my money.

Just trial fitted a piston and barrel… deck height is 0.90mm.
Awaiting kit to enable calculations to be done.

0.9mm is a bit tight, aim for 1.5mm but it depends on the CR you get with those dished pistons.

I realised that …. I always get confused with metric….but it does seem like I’ll need a biggish shim under the barrel.

When I built mine, ended up using a 1mm shim with 52CC to get compression 8.3 and it runs really well.

Looks like you're using the same parts as I did on my 2 litre - although that's not back in yet and hasn't been started either. The AMC heads seem really nice. I spent a little time balancing the Mahle pistons. They varied in weight by several grams.

Measuring kit arrived….after tightening down the cylinder as much as I dare and taking time to ensure that piston was at TDC…..deck height is 0.50, perhaps a bit more but additional 0.05 wouldn’t slip in.
So with a 54 cylinder head capacity and a 9 piston capacity, I get the following.[IMG]
Assuming that the deck height is probably 52/53 , I put figures in again.[IMG]
asking for 8.25 compression ratio gives this……changing deck height to 53 didn’t alter compression ratio.
    Looks like a .20 shim?

You need at least 1.3mm deck to stop the pistons hitting the head BUT if your new heads have a ledge that is effectively deck too because what you're interested in for combustion squish is the distance from the top of the piston to the flat part of the cylinder head. If that ledge is 1mm (I don't know that it is, you'll have to measure it yourself) that would give you a deck of that 1mm + the 0.5mm you measured to the top of the cylinders = 1.5mm which is good. I assume your measuring thing sat on the ledge and not inside it? If it sat inside you need to add the ledge depth to your deck height and recalculate.
