Adventure to the UK to fetch a westy.....

  1. Ok here we go!
Arrived in Derby at 12:00 on tuesday and went to fetch the van, looked good, some rust issues but the price reflected that.
I knew of the leaky rocker covers from @busmonkey doing a full report on it for me.
Drove 5 minutes after signing paperwork with the owner and got smoked out! Big time!
Pulled into a petrol station to fill up because the oil light flashed at me,needed 1 liter if oil!
Filled the tank and went over to meet @busmonkey in a cloud of smoke, gave me a headache in fact.
I bought some tools for the trip And some new plug leads.
Serviced and fiddled with it,changed the gaskets on the rocker covers but noticed the covers were upside down, fitted them the right way and it was not dripping but pouring out.
Left it at that until @dickie arrived and turned them back the wrong way around, made it loads better!
The reacon these rocker covers were leaking is i think they had been glued on and pried off with a screwdriver and literally twisted them badly.
This morning we went to absolute vw and spoke to Simon,he had none but gave me free of charge a nice big fat gasket! Nice one Simon much appreciated and thanks again for the loan of the timing light! I will look for some splitties and bays for you in Sweden. I left Derby at about 10:15 i think and arrived in harwich at 14:40.
The van was lumpy and hesitating when i set off but soon cleared and purred along very well after about an hour.
Drove between 60 and 70 mph (down hills)
Met this Irish fella at the ferry terminal with an old Hillman which he had driven from Belfast.
Nice guy and nice car,he wanted to look inside the van and i showed him around,he loved it and now wants one! It would suit him well being a travelling musician and songwriter.
Just had a pint and a good meal and checked into my cabin.
The ferry is planned to sail at 18:30 and i will arrive in Esbjerg,Denmark tomorrow at 13:00 Danish time.
I will then drive across Denmark into Southern Sweden hopefully without further troubles.
I think i will make home at about 18:00.
Please bear with me regarding pics, they will come up tomorrow when i arrive home and got my gadgets handy.
I would like to thank @busmonkey and @dickie for giving me a hand and you guys are always welcome to come and stay with me in Sweden.
You wont believe how stoked i am to own this van and be a part of this culture here on Thelatebay.
Oh almost forgot,i removed that gangster cap thing off the windscreen because it was blocking my view,im tall so you understand why.
This now belongs to @busmonkey now, hopefully he can swap it for something nice.
Thanks TLB and all you guys willing to help.
    Pics coming soon........

@Clive Neilands is a top bloke. Mel & I are definitely up for a trip to Sweden as the photos of his area are beautiful. Hot temperatures in the summer & beaches like Thailand! It's been a pleasure & a good laugh sharing the last 24 hours of his Bay adventure. Won't relax until you're home chap.

  7. WHS!;)

  8. As long as busmonkey inspects you first and does a full report of your condition! Lol

  9. Why dont they let you fix your car on a ferry?? I got to get this cd player working! I need some tunes!

  10. I wish I'd known that you were going to Simons today, I'd have walked down to say hello and brought you traditional British food, drink and drugs for your journey home.

  11. Why not,its unexplored by most people, the forests in Sweden are either state or privately owned, some fantastic spots, imagine waking up looking at a moose out of your window in your van!
Why not? My garage and help would be available for any repairs needed, lets do a convoy into the forests looking for trolls.hahahahahaha

  12. let the engine do the singing back home,,get to know it's tunes.
    Have a nice trip :)

  13. Good luck with the rest of the journey Clive.

By the way, the covers are a better fit upside down ( VW logo inside upside down)

Its a good idea to take the bales off and give them a slight bend to make sure they are very right to fit. Put gaskets on but make sure all if the surfaces are clean without any crap on them. People spot a leak and add all kinds of sealant which just makes the seal 10 x worse

    Good luck!
    :)

  15. Thanks joker, mounted them now with the vw logo the right way up,sealing better that way now,no smoke in the cabin so all is well.looking forward to the second part of this trip, its a fair bit longer than the first part.
Im feeling confident with the van now and feel i can relax and enjoy the drive and scenery.
Weather report looks ok,no snow or ice yet!

Clive, sorry I couldn't be of help to you - by the time I picked up Dickies email to me, it was late on & my buses are 20 miles away apart from not having any spare rocker covers :(

Good luck & make sure you send plenty of pictures!
