I had Tom Wilson as my bed time read for a few weeks and you can't go wrong with the Bug Me 9 video of a type 4 engine build by Jake Raby. Lots of little invaluable hints and tips in there. Don't laugh at his Carolina accent, I think the guys a genius I also had lots of help off of here and thesamba. I've built a few now but still make the odd little error especially when it comes to sitting out the timing and I tend to confuse myself then my head starts to hurt. I have a few pages copied out of Tom Wilson laminated for quick reference
Tom Wilson its on my desk here Ok, Ive just been out and measured the crankshaft endfloat and our dial gauge tells me its ~0.09mm which is in tolerance..check!
If you have a couple of weeks spare check out this forum. http://www.shoptalkforums.com Especially the type4rum in the speciality section. Lots good info on there.
I have only ever built a couple of type 1s with help Mark, but very simple to understand, as Steve said. Take your time and enjoy the job. Cleanliness is next to godliness btw! good luck
I would advise that before you plough on you start sourcing the remaining parts if you haven't already done so. Complete tin sets, alternator brackets fan casing etc as complete sets are not easy or cheap to come by on their own without an engine. Buying new or reproduction will cost a fortune. Things like the fan hub and fan are available new but will set you back £hundreds
Some little bits of progress this past week - both cylinder heads have been stripped, the valves measured (apart from the overall length) and so far, things look quite good Right hand Head (#1 & #2): Valve dimensions: #1 Ex 8.87, 8.87, 8.87 with slight play in the valve guide. Head diameter 34.47mm #1 In 7.93, 7.93, 7.93 no play in the guide. Head diameter 41.25mm #2 In 7.91, 7.91, 7.91 no play in the guide. Head diameter 41.17mm #2 Ex 8.89, 8.89, 8.89 with slight play in the valve guide. Head diameter 34.33mm Left hand Head (#3 & #4): Valve dimensions: #3 Ex 8.90, 8.91, 8.91 with slight play in the valve guide. Head diameter 34.21mm #3 In 7.91, 7.92, 7.92 with slight play in the valve guide. Head diameter 41.13mm #4 In 7.92, 7.92, 7.92 with slight play in the valve guides. Head diameter 41.35mm #4 Ex 8.90, 8.90, 8.90 with slight play in the valve guide. Head diameter 34.20mm I have taken the above measurements on the valve stem at three points along the length with a clean surface whilst the valve head measurements are taken as is - simply because of determining if there was any wear present or damage. They all look good so I'll measure the length next to asses that part of them and clean them up & regrind them.
A bit more progress on the strip down, I measured the valve lengths & all appear to be ok, they all appear to be slightly over the books 117mm overall length but I measured them as removed to see what carbon build up there was. I will clean them (in the future) and re-measure again. They are: 1E=117.57mm 1I=117.14mm 2I=117.04mm 2E=117.39mm 3E=117.51mm 3I=117.15mm 4I=117.47mm 4E=117.53mm All of the pistons have been removed from the conrods - the gudgeon pins have some marks on them with a little bit of wear - they will be replaced with the bigger pistons anyway. Inside the block there was evidence of rust, not much to worry about as its more than likely down to it being stood for a while!
The oil pump has been pulled out of the block for cleaning & inspection for wear - its very dirty and grimy and, although it rotates, it was very stiff initially with a stiffer spot so far round I will give this a good clean down and see what it measures up like later! Finally, thanks to @Paul Weeding for the fan housing, much appreciated
any info etc, please feel free to join in on here as it'll help everyone if the project goes to plan!
I've got a 2ltr sat waiting for me to rebuild - was thinking it might be a winter evening project!! - and so am following avidly for tips Good luck with it and pleased to see the head you had from me being used. Out of interest, you said in your first post that the engine had a 2ltr head with it rather than a 1800. If you are thinking of getting rid of it, please can you let me know the part number as I might be interested if it is the "A" part that goes with my "B"!
@PeaSoup Ill have a look tomorrow my notebook hasn't got the head part scribbled down and let you know the p/n for it!
Had some spare time over the past couple of lunch hours so I set to & split the crankcase's, plenty of muck, old burnt oil and worn parts.. Its was quite apparent that the camshaft had worn lobes and one of the camshaft bearing shells had damage On closer inspection & after consulting the Tom Wilson book, I'd suggest the cam is shot as are the followers which have all got convex wearing to the head
Follower wear Cam bearing shell damage The crankshaft looks okay but I think it needs a regrind, definitely new bearings as it looks like some of the shells had water ingression so I'll get it cleaned down, all of the oil galleries blown clean and a better check made after that. Im going to play safe and have it ground if it measures up okay
